Savage people living in the wilderness have long served the blackclads as foot soldiers, trading fealty to powerful druids in exchange for protection from the wilds. While many have distinguished themselves as mighty warriors, chieftains, and even spiritual leaders, perhaps none boast the renown or the infamy that attend the three dread warriors known as the Death Wolves. Sköll, Tala, and Caleb adhere to an ancient and barbaric form of Devourer worship. They are death cultists who venerate the Lord of the Feast, drawing power from their enemies by ripping out and devouring their still-beating hearts.

Thoughts on Death Wolves

Death Wolves in a nutshell

While the Death Wolves may be a three-person character unit of Wolves of Orboros, they play much more like a three-person character unit of Tharn Ravagers thanks to heart eating and overtaking. When loaded up with heart tokens, they're easily amongst the most durable models in the faction.

In Wild Hunt they are your most elite, hardest hitting infantry (as they have a greater volume of attacks versus Warpborn Skinwalkers) in Devourer's Host starting the game with 2 corpse tokens they become the hardest to kill infantry you can field regardless of your opponent.

Combos & Synergies

  • The Devourer's Host Theme allows them to start with 2 corpse tokens each, making them much more survivable from the start.
  • Boil Master & Spirit Cauldron can give them corpses, greatly increasing their survivability, and Puppet Master allows them a do-over on a bad hit/damage roll.
  • Baldur1 and Wurmwood both can trigger Prowl via Rapid Growth, have ways to buff their damage output (Stoneskin and Curse of Shadows respectively) and have feats that help them get up the board.
  • Grayle the Farstrider gives them tactician, allowing them to be screened by other models much more effectively, and they can charge through each other. Death March makes them incredibly accurate and punishes the enemy for failing to kill them.
  • Morvahna2 triggers their Prowl thanks to Fog of War, while Scales of Fate can allow them to re-roll failed hit/damage rolls, helping to prevent bad rolls from ruining their murder sprees.
  • Tanith can help them tear up a unit via Affliction. Scything Touch can also help them punch above their weight class.
  • Una2 can help them up the board via Wind Wall, increase their offensive output with Hand of Fate, and gives them greater threat/maneuverability with Mirage.
  • Wolf Lord Morraig both Flanks with them and makes them hit more accurately thanks to his Veteran Leader.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • You can't heart eat constructs. Or Archons
    • This gives them some really poor match ups Convergence of Cyriss especially.
  • Without corpse tokens, they are much less potent and die quickly.
  • They're not especially hard-hitting for a character unit.
  • Expensive at 3 points per model.

Tricks & Tips

  • They are much harder to kill if they have a corpse token.
