Dual Attack
Dual Attack

This model can make melee and ranged attacks in the same activation. When this model makes its initial melee attacks, it can also make its initial ranged attacks. A model with Dual Attack can make its initial melee and ranged attacks in any order you choose. This model cannot make ranged attacks after making a power attack.

Errata-Dual Attack and Unit Charges (2023-10-27)
Question: If a unit with Dual Attack charges a single model, are all placed in melee range, and the first model kills the charge target, can the remaining members of the unit make ranged attacks, or do they forfeit their Combat Action because they don't have any enemy models in their melee range?
Answer: The check for melee range is done at the end of movement. If you kill the targets before they attack, they can still do their ranged attack. (Malkav13)
Explanation: This post is correct.

Errata-Dual Attack and Special Attacks (2023-08-10)
Question: Can a model with Dual Attack make any combination of ranged special attack and normal melee initial attacks, or its melee special attack and normal ranged initial attacks? (Example: Bison Both Barrels and Ram, or Mariner Thresher and gunshot).
Answer: No.
Explanation: The bison can not use dual attack and also make a special attack. That is correct in that (Thresher) example too.

Bond(Xekaar)
  • If Chiron begins the game in Xekaar's battlegroup, it is bonded to him. Chiron is not considered to be bonded while under your opponent's control. While Chiron is bonded to Xekaar and in his control range, it gains boosted ranged attack rolls.
Special Action
A model can make one of the following special action(s) during its Combat Action if it meets the requirements for the special action's use:

Dig In - A model with Dig In gains cover, Resistance:Blast, and does not block Line of Sight (LOS). The model remains dug in until it moves, is placed, or is engaged.

A model with cover gains a +4 DEF bonus against ranged and arcane attack rolls. Cover provides no benefit against spray attacks. Cover is not cumulative with Concealment, but is cumulative with other effects that modify a model's DEF. Extra-large and Huge-based models never gain DEF bonuses from cover.

The warlocks that serve the dragon Everblight can call upon a myriad of dragonspawn, each a perfect engine of draconic destruction. The carnivean, an ancient and favored dragonspawn, shreds flesh, bone, and steel with its mighty claws and a shark-like maw.

Thoughts on Carnivean

Carnivean in a nutshell

The Carnivean is a walking tank that has it all. It has s downright ridiculous 5 attacks on the charge with a POW 14 Assault spray and a POW 12 Chain attack and a decent amount of Fury to serve as the heaviest and beatiest of heavies in the Legion. It's also, once you include Spiny Growth, the toughest of the heavy warbeasts the Legion can field (and right up there even without it). Having a 10" range on your assault spray provides credible threat at range as well even at RAT 5, so in short it can do just about everything - but you pay for everything you get and it can rarely do it all at once. Its tankiness should also be considered in the faction's context - even with its animus it rarely survives a one-on-one brawl with another heavy in its point cost.

Combos & Synergies

Due to its high cost, a Carnivean won't fit into every list, especially when crunching for points. That said, some lists may favor a Carnivean more than his other counterparts, but is generally a reliable beast in any battlegroup if you're not sure what else to take and have the space.

  • Absylonia1 - lacking most of the battlegroup-wide force multipliers of her epic form she rather tags along with fewer, but quality pieces. The Carnivean fits nicely into that role.
  • Rhyas1 - A Carnivean can profit tremendously from Rapport, both in terms of RAT and MAT. With her, his Assault spray might actually hit the squishy support hiding behind that warjack you really want dead. Or a warcaster/warlock if you lined it up just right. In Children of the Dragon he competes a bit with Typhon for this spell. While the Carnivean technically gets a bit more mileage out of the spell, Typhon is usually a bit more exciting target for it. Don't forget, use of Rapport is optional - if you use your own model for targeting a breath attack, you can revert to the basic RAT5, and use your superior RAT 6 on the enemy.
  • Thagrosh0 - Rerolls on its Assault spray, initials and Chain attack are an excellent, excellent use of Ethrunbal's Guidance. Grabbing and Smashing something, then dropping a Blight Burst template on it is a game winning combination and a free Spiny Growths and transfers to this damage sponge should keep Thags alive.
  • Thagrosh1 loves a Carnivean. Or maybe two! As Legion's only real tank beast under Legion's only real tank caster, the Carnivean makes for a good backbone to a beast brick. Against melee armies, Thagrosh's Carniveans can be effectively ARM22. +2 ARM for Spiny Growth and -2 STR against attackers trapped in Death Shroud. It's not too hard to achieve that with Thags' solid CMD stat. On top of that, he can cast Spiny Growth on himself for free, and Carnivean are a solid target for his feat if you didn't bring Typhon too.
  • Thagrosh2 - Most of the same logic applies here too, although he prefers a more diverse cast of beasts, especially since he can only buff the ARM of one beast at a time.
  • Saeryn1 - It's hard to say no to ARM23 Carnivean that bite back for a turn.
  • Seraph - SPD5 is slow in Legion, and the Slipstream can do a lot to help him still get the alpha strike.
  • Nephilim Bloodseer - Borrow Spiny Growth for his own survival - it is a model that likes to play forward to spread his Telemetry ability. If you're building a spellslinging list, there may be merit in including this combo as long as you also don't need the Bloodseer to use his own animus.
  • Vayl1 - Accuracy buff all by herself via Frost Field and Incite - precisely what the Carnivean needs. Leash can also add some speed boost if used wisely. Also, enemies will rarely risk coming closer to Vayl, until you can move in a Carni with Dark Sentinel.
  • Lylyth3 - With her feat the Carnivean's sub-par RAT ceases to be an issue, and with Battle Host you can spray up to 20" away. She can also make good use of its animus if has to play defensively.
  • Blight Archon's run them pretty effectively, granting access to Sprint and pushing their ARm to 22 with Spiny Growth and Dragon's Blood.
  • Ravens of War grants lesser warbeasts Mark Target, which crank their RAT up to 7.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Slow, expensive, and not really that durable, even with its animus on.
  • Can become redundant: the Scythean fights better in melee, the Ravagore has a better gun and Proteus is just as durable with some control elements If you don't want a jack-of-all trades, you might want to choose one of its competitors instead.
  • Poor RAT - unlikely to hit anything at range without boosting.
  • Average Mat - you will probably need a MAT buff to trigger chain attack.

Tips & Tricks

  • The Assault Spray has a 18" threat range and so can catch enemy casters napping.
  • Look for your charge/assault angles; you can frequently catch a lot of targets and/or from the rear if you end up in the right place after your charge.
  • If your target stands beside an obstacle or obstruction, try to get an angle where you can throw them at said obstruction/obstacle with your chain attack by throwing them directly away. You may have more freedom if there is another model with equal or bigger base behind them since you can just throw your target at them instead of directly away. If your target stops within 1", you may buy extra attacks against it which will auto-hit, it they became knocked down. A POW12 (boostable) damage roll with 3D6 may leave a mark on quite a few things.
