Thoughts on Weird Wendell, Gremlin Wrangler

Weird Wendell, Gremlin Wrangler in a nutshell

He's a ... disruption solo? It’s difficult to summarise him, because he is just plain weird (fittingly). His main and only weapon has random effects so it’s very difficult to plan a strategy around Weird Wendell but he is at least very accurate with his strangeness and hard for your opponent to pin down.

On his death Wendell produces a disruptive Gremlin Swarm model (worth 3 points). Therefore you could think of him as a 1-point solo with recursion and flag scoring potential. Because you can't really rely on a gun that may deal a pow10 1 time in 3.

Combos & Synergies

  • He provides a Gremlin Swarm to Warmachine factions that usually do not have access to them.

In Grymkin

  • In a Grymkin army he gets around FA restrictions on Gremlin Swarms in Grymkin - especially useful in Dark Menagerie where Gremlins have serenity.
  • He is a ranged support solo for the usually melee-centric Grymkin. While this means he is limited in terms of the Faction supporting him, it also means he has a niche that no other Grymkin can fill.
  • The Wanderer - with a naturally high defence star crossed and fog of war really help keep him in the fight.
  • The Dreamer - Mark Target is nice, so is the chance of a -4 to damage rolls on your enfeeble target.

In Minions

  • Sturm & Drang - telekinesis is a fantastic spell that ups the chances of him using practiced shot. Deceleration takes his armour to a ‘may not die to blast damage’ level.

In Mercenaries

  • Rahera - can use her feat for an extra shot, she can also protect him from guns, because of how the gun works you can’t rely on Black Spot but when his value comes from scoring points that’s less of an issue.

As a point of note the spawned Gremlin is still a Minion solo so you can’t target it with faction spells unfortunately

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • He's expensive money-wise to play: He comes in a box with Spawn Gates for the Riot Quest game, which inflates his cost, and you need to own a Gremlin Swarm model for when he dies (unless your opponent is okay with proxies). This makes him one of the most fiscally expensive solos to collect in the game.
  • If he is RFP'd before destroyed, or destroyed by non-attack related damage (e-leaps, continuous effwcts, etc), you don't get a Swarm.
  • Havoc is unreliable. In fact a lot of what he does is random and weird so you can’t really plan for him.
  • If he gets into melee he cannot do anything other than wait for help, hope the opponent misses so he can dodge away, or take a free strike.
  • Paper thin armour.

Tricks & Tips

  • He can contest objectives really well - as if he dies he summons a stealth and incorporeal model in his place.
  • Run him past enemies to trigger free strikes if you really need the gremlin swarm. If they don’t hit you shoot them in the back if they do hit you will die and get your swarm.
  • If he dies in a space where there isn't room to put down a medium base, you don't get to put the Gremlins into play. So don't ever let more than one model get B2B with Wendell!

Other

Trivia

  • Released 2019.12
  • Weird Wendell looks quite a bit like Doctor Who - the fact he is included with gates that let you teleport can’t be a coincidence.
