Ol' Grim

No one is sure how or why Ol' Grim exists. Pistol wraiths have long been a known threat from the old Nightmare Empire of Cryx, but a "rifle wraith," which Ol' Grim appears to be, shouldn't even be possible. Yet despite this, he exists. Ol' Grim seems to have been a widowmaker in life, if his incorporeal visage is any indication. This fact causes even more perplexities with regards to his origins.
All that the scavengers of the wastes know is that Ol' Grim is a downright lethal nuisance. He appears without warning in the distance, shoots a few times at anything alive in his sights, then fades away into the ether. Certain scavenger crew bosses claim to know ways to lure Ol' Grim to their side temporarily using old mementos and forbidden rituals, but none are willing to share their secrets just yet.

Thoughts on Ol' Grim
Ol' Grim in a nutshell
He's a ranged combat solo. In an ideal setup he plinks a random single wound model and scoops up its soul, then uses that soul to trigger Wraith Shot on his 2nd attack to blast something worthwhile. If he kills that second target, he can then use Dark Blessing to keep himself safer while corporeal.
Alternatively he collects two souls turn one and then uses them to threaten the enemy caster with two fully boosted wraith shots that ignore intervening models and LOS turn two.
In a more realistic setup, there are too many soul-denial abilities and he just sits back, plinks two dudes each turn, and gets zero souls. Even without souls a RAT 8, RNG 14", ROF 2, POW 12 gun is nothing to sneeze at - him getting souls is just a bonus.
Essentially he's an incorporeal sniper:
- Cryx has heaps of incorporeal, but no proper snipers, so they like the shooting aspect.
- Khador has heaps of snipers, but no incorporeal, so they like the spooky aspect.
Combos & Synergies
- The Widowmaker Marksman grants him Swift Hunter.
- Butcher1 adds an additional die to his damage rolls on feat turn.
- Vladimir1 has Signs and Portends for him.
- Kommander Oleg Strakhov - Sentry allows him to earn a soul then become Incorporeal again when he activates.
- Irusk2 can put Fire For Effect on him to help him get going, then cycle it to another target once he has a soul or two.
- Old Witch2 Windstorm protects the entire army but with such a long range gun he can hang back after shooting and force the enemy to come to him.
- Deneghra3 loves soul colelcting models. Poltergeist can skew his DEF immensely with Dark Blessing and Mortality is great with a POW 12 gun.
- Skarre2 and Rahera offer Black Spot for even more shooting!
Drawbacks & Downsides
- His points cost is his main drawback. If he were 5 points he'd just about be an auto-include as a Requisition option, but at 6 points he needs to justify his inclusion - and often he doesn't quite make the grade.
- He needs to be the closest eligible Soul Taker to get the soul, which is awkward for a long ranged sniper.
- Many Archons shut down long-range soul collection.
- He doesn't ignore Stealth (the most common anti-shooting tech) even when using Wraith Shot.
- In Cryx he competes somewhat with the Hellslinger Phantom for the role of "elite Incorporeal ranged-combat solo with 2 shots per turn"; and you don't normally want to take both.
- If you want a model that stays safer over multiple turns, use Hellslinger (Ghost Shot from behind LOS-blocking terrain).
- If you want a model that reaches out and touches something a long way away, take Ol' Grim (22" threat range on his gun).
Tricks & Tips
- He is NOT a mercenary, he can only be played in Khador or Cryx (or Hearts of Darkness)
- Don't run him too far forward turn 1. Between Apparition and a 14" gun, he has no need to stick his neck out.
