Lore - Banes
Banes are undead creatures used by the nation of Cryx. They are created by binding unliving flesh to a malevolent spirit that has been trapped between Caen and Urcaen.
Bane Lord Tartarus
Long before the Circle Orboros, circa 2200 BR (3,000 years ago), the Molgur ruled the dark forests of the Western Immoren. They harnessed the dark magics of the Devourer Wurm and controled the Thornwood, the Northern Midlunds, and the Eastern Midlunds. Leading them was a great chieftain named Horfar Grimmr that wanted nothing more than to destroy the early Menite priest-kings and their great wall called the Shield of Thrace. Opposing him was a Menite called Golivant, the greatest priest-king ever known.
The Molgur were shattered in the battle against the Menites at the Shield of Thrace. The priest kings captured and tortured Grimmr in ritual flames to purify his soul of the Devourer Wurm.
Grimmr did not yield. His soul was too powerful to be cleansed by the holy fire. Though his body became scarred and disfigured, his soul burned only with hatred for the Menites. After months of ritual burning, he died but did not yield. Due to Menite curses his soul did not reach the afterlife, instead being trapped in the void between Urcaen and Caen. This crack between realms, is a timeless void, and souls fall into this fissure experience endless torment. They are able to peer at both the land of the living and the dead, and become consumed by jealousy and hatred.
Trapped in the void for 2,000 years, Grimmr soul became seeped in the energy of the place. His soul became a malevolent spirit known as a bane.
Tenebrous, one of the original Lich Lords, is one of the few beings that understand this realm, and regularly uses his necromantic power to conscript these bane spirits into the service of Cryx. When he pulled the spirit of Horfar Grimmr, he bound it in unliving flesh, and encased it special armor inscribed with runes to contain his essence. Horfar was reborn as Bane Lord Tartarus -- who rules over all other banes in service of the Dragonfather.
