Cohort models are warjacks, warbeasts, horrors, monstrosities, and any other non-leader, non-warrior models that can appear in a battlegroup.

Educated Opinion

There are some models that can be included in battlegroups, but aren't cohorts. These models usually have the attached rule. The developers felt the need to distinguish between models linked directly to the leader and those other models in the battlegroup. They also needed a way to collectively refer to warjacks, warbeasts, monstrosities, horrors, etc without having to spell it out every time. That way, spells and effects could be written to say "cohorts within the spellcaster's control range" instead of listing all the non-warrior models in the battlegroup.
