This mk3 Theme Force has no equivalent in mk4. You can't even build something similar using the Unlimited rules. |
Evil is best only by good, or so believe the followers of Menoth who have united in their devotion to face the Infernal invasion. And with the full conviction of their beliefs and the might of two nations, powerful Menites gather together to prove that faith and the will of the Creator can deny even evils that were foolishly invited to sow the souls of the innocent. They are certain none can prevail if they can’t.

Warriors of the Old Faith in a Nutshell
Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered! A sword-day, a red day, 'ere the sun rises!
WotOF is a dual-faction theme, designed to use the light and heavy cavalry of both the Khadoran and Menite force, united under a single banner. You will also get various support elements from both sides (the Choir of Menoth and the Initiates of the Order of the Wall among them), as well as all the cavalry-battle engines. This is an elite force with a relatively small model count, which nevertheless looks impressive on the table. If you ever dreamed about massed cavalries, spiked pommels and mighty lances flashing in the sunlight, before thundering down onto the enemy's ranks, this theme got you covered.
Theme weaknesses
- The cost ($) of horses.
The price of cavalry models is moderately high, making this an expensive force to collect. On the other hand, their points cost is also high so at least you don't need to buy a swarm of them to fill a 75 point list.
- Not beginner-friendly in terms of buying models
Beginners should refrain from starting with this theme (unless they plan on collecting both Khador and Protectorate). If this is your first theme that you collect, ever, then you'll end up with a collection of two half-armies. The problem occurs when you try to make a second list to pair with it, half of your collection needs to be shelved before you even start looking at which models you own are allowed in your second theme.
This theme is more for people who already own one faction (or both), and can easily expand their collection into this theme by buying just a few extras.
- Lack of in-faction support models.
There are many non-cavalry support models back in each horse's "home theme force" that you'll lose access to if you instead take the horses in this theme (for example, Iron Fang Uhlans get buffed by Sofia and the Iron Fang Kovnik back in the Legion of Steel theme).
- Limited versatility
There's only 4 casters in this theme (so far), so it will rarely take enemies by surprise.
- Inherent drawbacks of cavalry models
All those horses are large-based models, that can lead to some positioning difficulties if you want to make all your attacks connect. Also, you must rely on terrain as much as possible to avoid being shot off the board by the enemy's gunline. Huge based models like Reznik2 and the battle engines suffer even more (the former only from the magical ranged attacks).
- Alpha-strike dependant
Cavalry really need to strike first and get the most of Linebreaker & Impact Attacks to justify their points cost. Charge denial and/or fast jamming infantry that stop you getting the alpha can cause a lot of headache for your units. Also, your ranged presence is not something to write home about.
- No extra Mercenaries
Unlike normal themes, you're not allowed up to one extra Mercenary solo/unit. This also limits your access to Partisans like Kayazy.
Good Early Purchases
The Initiates, as well as the Choir, are almost mandatory choices. The Vassal of Menoth Empowers warjacks, freeing up your warcaster's resources to do other things; since you get two for a single Requisition point, it's usually a good choice. Wracks are much the same and can fill in the last point or two of a list. The Hermit of Hengehold is a good utility solo, and can be taken for a Requisition point as well. The War Dog, being the only caster attachment available in the theme, isn't a bad choice to take, although not necessary in every list.
Starting a 25 point Brawl list
In 2020.10 Phillip Melvin, one of the LOS authors, put together this mixed Khador-Protectorate list for the Brawlmachine format. It was then updated for the 2021.10 errata. He even wrote about it's playstyle and expanding it beyond 25 points, which you can read here.

Caster Thoughts
Kreoss3: Kreoss3 is all about his entourage of Exemplar Vengers and Gravus, so it is this theme for him, or Exemplar Interdiction. In WooF he he and his fellows gain Line Breaker, which is a substantial buff and he can rely on the Paladin package as a back up. Flame Bringers are also an excellent Arcane Ward target, but you probably want another unit of Vengers over them. Among Fire of Salvation and Kodiaks/Grolars he will also have a battlegroup that is unimpeded by terrain!
Feora3: Feora's main reason to play this theme are the presence of Kossite Woodsmen and Grolars who reach stupid levels of damage output under Incite and Red Line in the Grolar's case. She does sacrifice access to The Living Covenant however, which is a huge blow, as it is essential in order to keep her alive after casting Incite. Instead you have to rely on the Paladins as Shield Guards and the War Dog and Man-O-War Drakhuns to threaten Counter Charges to protect her. For what it'sworth, her feat is exceletn on the Battle Engines who can set fire to the enemy army with Flame Trail and have a high volume of atatcks to make use of Incite.
Reznik2: Lots of Shield Guards to keep him safe is a gift of Menoth himself to Reznik, who is on a huge base. Death March is great on a unit of Vengers where it stacks with Battle Driven and he has a plethora of fantastic targets for Boundless Charge in Yuri1, Manhunters, Menite Archons, Battle Engines and the Paladin package. Kossites can threaten ambush and force the enemy towards the middle of the board, where his feat will be all the more devastating, especially due to the high number of models with Thresher in the theme.
Vladimir3: This theme is everything Vlad3 ever dreamt of; Cavalry galore! Hand of Fate steers him into running a colossal such as the Judicator or Victor who become devastating gun plat forms with the Choir buff. Alternatively it can go on a unit such as Greylord Outriders of Flame Bringers. Infernal Machine can then be put on the colossal to speed it up, but a Dervish or Purifier also works well with it since it makes them very fast, so they can contest a rectangular zone your colossal cannot hope to get to. Champions of the Order of the Wall and Fenris are extraordinary recipients of his feat, being able to dig deep into enemy lines and Mentite Archons and the Hermit are the best targets for Dash.
