Shield Guard
When a friendly model is directly hit by a non-spray ranged attack while within 3 inches of a model with Shield Guard, you can choose to have the model with Shield Guard be directly hit instead.
  1. That model is automatically hit and suffers all damage and effects.
  2. A model can use Shield Guard only once per round.
  3. A model cannot use Shield Guard if it is incorporeal, knocked down, or stationary.
  4. Shield Guard can only be used once per attack.

Beat Back
Immediately after a basic atack with this weapon is resolved during the models Combat Action:
  1. The enemy model hit can be pushed 1 inch directly away from the attacking model.
  2. After the enemy model is pushed, the attacking model can advance up to 1 inch directly toward it.

You cannot move toward a model that is no longer on the table. When a movement occurs after a damage is resolved, and resolution of the damage destroys or removes a model from the table, then it is impossible to move toward that destroyed/removed model.

  Errata-Follow Up (2023-08-23)
Question: What is the timing of follow up, and do you still move if a slammed model is destroyed?
Answer: 1. Slam attack
2. Damage to target and collateral damage.
3. If slammed model is still on the table, Follow Up movement.
Explanation: The old ruling will still apply here.
The rationale is the “slam” and “Slammed” descriptions include the target taking a damage roll caused by the action. Therefore the damage roll is part and parcel with resolving the “slam”. For the it was that you can not follow up to a model that has been destroyed as there is no longer a model on the board to follow up to.

Lore

One of the first warjacks developed by the Protectorate after the Cygnaran Civil War was the Crusader, a massive warjack boasting heavy armor and capable of crushing attacks. It has served as the foundation for several masterpieces of war. The Templar, for one, smashes enemies with overwhelming force from an unassailable position behind its thick shield. Of more recent production, the Vanquisher wields a great “blazing star” spiked ball in one hand and a flame belcher in the other. This weapon sends an oil-filled cannonball that bursts and ignites on impact.

Thoughts on the Templar

Templar in a nutshell

The Templar is a big beefy beatstick with a longer threat range than most Protectorate heavies thanks to its large flail, is tougher than most Protectorate heavies thanks to its shield, and shield guards people on the way in before becoming a nasty brawler.

It covers a lot of the same ground as the Indictor trading MAT and anti magic, for reach, beat back and shield guard. At the start of MK3 the Templar was the favoured of the 2 but the introduction of cheap shield guards in the form of Initiates of the Wall and a general shift away from shooting the Indictor wins out more often these days.

Combos & Synergies

  • Choir of Menoth and Vassal of Menoth turn its abilities up a level.
  • Shield guard, toughness, and a large chain weapon with Beat back mean that like the Crusader it works well with anyone.
  • Durant1 - Bracer on an ARM 21 heavy is pretty good, especially one with Shield Guard to keep him or something else safe.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • If you just want a bodyguard for your caster go for a Devout
  • If you just want a simple beatstick, get the Crusader for less cost.
  • Slow.

Tips & Tricks

  • Both the pushing and the advance from Beat Back are optional - occasionally it might come useful, if you want to push out several tough targets, who are just chipping the edge of a zone in a scenario.
