Part 4 – Calandra in Power of Dhunia

Week 2 brought some changes that had me investigating Calandra in Storm of the North. She’s so fun, I hit up an old Power of Dhunia build to see how it would change with the new models and modifications to the Dhunian Knot and Runeshapers.

I stated before that I really like Calandra. She’s super fun, and can play in any theme. About two years ago, I was rocking her in Power of Dhunia. Here’s where I took her old build.

Pre CID

The original list plays into Star-crossed, with high defense Dahlia and Skarath, Nyss Hunters, backed up by Runeshapers, Dhunian Knots throwing around Puppet Master, and the beefy Mauler to take things apart when things get too close. I’ve been criticized for not including Mulg, but I find I don’t really need an extension to Befuddle or Misfortune in this list. Fun list until the AOEs start flying. Sometimes Befuddle triggers an out of sequence attack, and sometimes some weaponmasters kick some butt. Other times, I find myself wishing I didn’t have so many friendly models, and more friendly faction models.

Post CID

The Krielstone change grants a point to play with. I could drop the Mauler, and trade in light warbeasts. Mauler comes out, and Pyre Troll goes in. The list has 8 points to play with. If I take out Dahlia, I can add in a total of 25 points. That’s three lights, or 2 units and 2 lights. Or a heavy and 2 units. But I would also like to add in the Dhunian archons. At first, I was thinking of just dropping in a Pyre Troll and Storm Troll, followed up by 5 whelps, but realized I could drop in Horgle 1. With Horgle 1, I really want to fit in both the Pyre and Slag, but I decide keeping the Earthborn is better than running two warbeasts under the junior warlock. I like the Swamp Troll when facing living models, but 19 points is a strange number. I could get a Storm Troll and Slag Troll, Troll Axer and Bouncer, or any combination between. An 8 pointer leaves me short, as does a 7 pointer. And with 19 left, Mulg is still too expensive. At first, I think adding a Storm Troll is the way to go, blasting single wound infantry and giving immunity to electricity. Then for 10 points, I drop in the Axer. Then I realize I’m 5 points over, because I don’t have the free Runebearer.

So… what changed?

Dahlia and Skarath, Mauler, and a Knot leave the list, and I bring in the archons, Horgle and a Pyre Troll, and an Axer with some whelps. Honestly, these changes lack direction. If I take out the Axer and whelps, I can add in a Brawler for some big damage.

What do other folks say?

Makes sense. I’ll agree with the Earthborn. It’s been in most of my Calandra lists for a long while now, for good reason. The whelps still offer flex, with a Storm Troll coming out for the Brawler if need be. I can always put them back if I want. I am still attached to the Nyss. If they do come out, the list would look like it does below:

Okay, the Horgle thing makes up for the lack of a Mauler. The Brawler says “I don’t need a Mauler, but I’ll take the additional damage if I can.” An extra Runeshapers unit for hard to shoot dudes, and the Swamp Gobbers are a high defense smoke generating unit. I like the Storm Troll with Calandra because getting shot by electricity sucks. I still think Storm of the North is more interesting, but this has possibility.
