Dual Attack
Dual Attack

This model can make melee and ranged attacks in the same activation. When this model makes its initial melee attacks, it can also make its initial ranged attacks. A model with Dual Attack can make its initial melee and ranged attacks in any order you choose. This model cannot make ranged attacks after making a power attack.

Errata-Dual Attack and Unit Charges (2023-10-27)
Question: If a unit with Dual Attack charges a single model, are all placed in melee range, and the first model kills the charge target, can the remaining members of the unit make ranged attacks, or do they forfeit their Combat Action because they don't have any enemy models in their melee range?
Answer: The check for melee range is done at the end of movement. If you kill the targets before they attack, they can still do their ranged attack. (Malkav13)
Explanation: This post is correct.

Errata-Dual Attack and Special Attacks (2023-08-10)
Question: Can a model with Dual Attack make any combination of ranged special attack and normal melee initial attacks, or its melee special attack and normal ranged initial attacks? (Example: Bison Both Barrels and Ram, or Mariner Thresher and gunshot).
Answer: No.
Explanation: The bison can not use dual attack and also make a special attack. That is correct in that (Thresher) example too.

Bond(Xekaar)
  • If Chiron begins the game in Xekaar's battlegroup, it is bonded to him. Chiron is not considered to be bonded while under your opponent's control. While Chiron is bonded to Xekaar and in his control range, it gains boosted ranged attack rolls.
Special Action
A model can make one of the following special action(s) during its Combat Action if it meets the requirements for the special action's use:

Dig In - A model with Dig In gains cover, Resistance:Blast, and does not block Line of Sight (LOS). The model remains dug in until it moves, is placed, or is engaged.

A model with cover gains a +4 DEF bonus against ranged and arcane attack rolls. Cover provides no benefit against spray attacks. Cover is not cumulative with Concealment, but is cumulative with other effects that modify a model's DEF. Extra-large and Huge-based models never gain DEF bonuses from cover.

Resistance-Blast Resistance-Blast:
When this model suffers a blast damage roll, remove one die from the damage roll.

Among the myriad powers at Everblight’s disposal, the most terrifying is the dragon’s capacity to infect his enemies in body and mind. The blight is not only a means to create his servants and spawn but also a weapon to be wielded against lesser creatures. The afflictor was birthed to serve this very purpose. Its body is a vessel for delivering the seed of all-consuming, destructive life. Struck by the beast’s wicked tail, a victim is pumped full of caustic corruption, its flesh made a vessel for a new child of the dragon.

Thoughts on Afflictor

Afflictor in a nutshell

The Afflictor is a thin-armored harassing piece. Along with the Raek it is the cheapest light you can get in the faction, though with a bit less mobility and an active board controlling animus instead of a passive one. It has average combat abilities, slightly more durability than our (non-Mekanoshredder) lessers and an interesting bit of added utility through Infection.

Attractor is a cheap board control animus that may allow your beast and its commander to pull something within threat range for the rest of your army, or just pull away models from flags and zones. It can also mess with other abilities that require B2B contact, like Shield Wall, Wall of Steel, Defensive Line and so on.

Infection is a sort of "reverse" recursion, turning your enemy's warrior model into an Incubus solo. Those Incubi are allowed to activate the same turn they come into play (unlike most recursion-style models) and thanks to the nature of their creation are often already in a position to threaten the enemy mid- to back-lines. Choosing the right target may easily swing the scenario for your favor, for example killing a lone contesting model near a flag and then advance up with your newly spawned solo to capture it.

Overtake is mostly a situational ability since with an average FURY and a single initial attack it lacks the power to grind through clustered infantries, but may occasionally be useful to add a crucial inch for your Attractor range, or reposition after a successful kill.

Due to its toolkit the Afflictor enjoys battlegroup commanders who can operate independently and/or provide Fury-efficiency to it, leaving resource for some critical boosts. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution for all your troubles but it's cheap enough that you may find points to it in some lists.

Combos & Synergies

  • Abby1 can put Refuge on it, allowing it to nab an enemy model and retreat, greatly extending its lifespan.
  • Abby2 offers free charges as well as increased SPD and MAT for the Afflictor and is an excellent battlegroup multiplier in general.
  • Thagrosh1's or Thagrosh0's Fog of War elevates its DEF against ranged attacks to respectable levels and both can cast its animus for free.
  • Rhyas1 or Rhyas2 like Attractor to pull targets closer, though this is a little less useful with her 2" melee range.
    • This trick can sometimes snag a few extra targets in Rhyas2's Flashing Blades, and may allow Rhyas1 to place herself into the back arc of the enemy during her feat if the target was blocking a landing zone for a more important target.
  • Kryssa - Energizer improves its mediocre threat range and her feat makes it a 1 turn wonder capable of trading into bigger tougher infantry. Finally the Incubi it makes gains Tough if within Kryssa's CMD bubble
  • Kallus1 - Why sacrifice your own models to get Incubi for Angelic Sacrifice if you can get those from the enemy for free?
  • Bethayne2 - Cheap light warbeast to gather Flesh Web tokens for your feat, if you prefer it over the Raek

Non-warlocks

  • As with any flying unit, the Blighted Nyss Sorceress offers free charges for the Afflictor. As an added bonus, Tough, single wounded models under her Blight Storm are excellent targets for its Infection as it essentially guarantees your Incubus will enter the field. You can also go further with Overtake, to
  • The Afflictor can complement to the Legion's other pulling tricks, to move key enemy models out of position. The Angelius, Hellmouth, Neraph or Proteus are all excellent candidates, while teaming up with a Seraph might bring your own key model closer. It's not easy to set up such a chain, but it is very rewarding if you manage to pull it off.
  • The Beast Mistress offers excellent Fury economy with her Aggressive Field marshal even outside the Sorceress' command bubble, and can snatch crucial extra inches with Energizer - either to fall back, or get into your target's back arc. If you can find a safe spot to defend her from getting sniped, this package costs less than a beefy combat solo.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Negligible combat abilities versus other light beasts and heavily armored targets, and if you do go after those sorts of targets you can't trigger Infection.
  • Requires you to buy Incubi models (with your money, not list points - they're free models from a game mechanics perspective).
  • Poor defensive capabilities
  • Its usefulness will always depend on how much warrior model your opponent fields that allow you to trigger Infection..

Tricks & Tips

  • Infection Incubi
    • Incubi generated by the Afflictor are FREE and do not require you to include a set of Incubi in your list.
    • Incubi can activate normally the turn they are put into play.
  • If you want to make the most of its animus, study carefully the rule clarifications at the bottom of this page, particularly the one on pushes.
