Misery cages are a cruel twist on the gibbets used on the mainland to punish pirates. While a mundane gibbet holds a living prisoner to waste away, a misery cage wrings arcane power from the flesh and souls of any locked away within. Cryxians stuff the dead and dying into misery cages so warcasters can draw upon their essence to fuel their profane magic, which renders the body within to crumbling ash, a terrifying but relatively merciful end.

Thoughts on Misery Cage

Misery Cage in a nutshell

A cheap focus efficiency piece. The Misery cage is fueled by corpses and grants your warcaster focus. As soul denial has become more prevalent the opportunity to get the same efficiency from corpses became a much more appealing prospect.

In Ghost Fleet you have the advantage that dying friendly models still granting corpses but come back to unlife with Deathbound and Reanimation respectively.

Often it will depend on your caster choice and volume of friendly infantry (as you can’t dictate what the enemy may bring) when deciding wether to take 3 as a Requisition option or just 1 or 2 as a point filler.

Combos & Synergies

  • Casters like it, obviously.
  • The Satyxis Blood Priestess occasionally kills friendly troops to trigger her free spell, and the cage can get the friendly corpse.
  • Revenant Crew - come back from the dead, meaning you can deploy the cage further back; in a safer way, still get corpses with less of a downside.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • It will die easily without a corpse token or in melee.
  • Because it can’t move it’s initial placement is imperative.
  • The initial run of Cage models have production issues, with warped/droopy posts and/or brittle chains.
    • You can fix the wonky post by heating it with hot water or a hairdryer, straightening it, then dunking it in ice water.
    • You'll need to pin or replace the chain.

Tricks & Tips

  • You can only take one focus per turn, even if you have multiple cages on the board.
  • Deploy it B2B with a flag, and it will contest/score until it is destroyed.
  • You don't normally want to take focus from it on Turn 1, as it will leave the Cage without Stealth.
However, if you've deployed it out of LOS, or the enemy has no guns, and you really need that +1 focus on Turn 1, it's probably ok.
  • If you empty it, try to kill an enemy the same turn to fill it back up. Or leave one of your cannon fodder pieces in its collection range. You don't want it to be without Stealth if you can help it.
