To look upon a mountain king is to see the primal essence of the troll: hunger, rage, and the strength of nature. Set loose upon the world, these great trolls shake the ground with their tread and sunder granite with their roars. Mountain kings, who seek to satisfy an appetite incomprehensible to lesser creatures, now walk Caen again after millennia of imprisonment below the earth. Their awakening can mean only desperation—or madness—on the part of the trollkin.

Thoughts on Mountain King

Mountain King in a nutshell

The Mountain King is a gargantuan that provides the centrepiece of any Trollblood army it's in. It's not as specialist as the Glacier King or Sea King but it does bring some interesting rules and army support.

With Kill Shot and Assault once it's in melee it can strike deeply. It offers the only non character access to Primal outside of Vengeance of Dhunia and it's ability to spawn whelps offers very minor self protection from annoyance and a fury management system. Because of all this the Mountain King offers more tactical nuisance than you may expect. But it does eat into a large part of your army with it's cost.

It would be wrong to judge a 30 point model solely on the effectiveness of a 1 point one but you will hopefully make a few Troll Whelps each game with the Mountain King, so reading that article for deeper tactical nuisance is also advised.

Combos & Synergies

  • Krielstone - any tough model wants help from one.
  • Troll Whelps - It makes new ones, they block charge lanes and can act as comfort food.
  • A skirmish screen - the Mountain King does not like receiving charges.
  • Trollkin Warders/Farrow Valkyries - the Mountain King is a big target, so Shield Guards are appreciated
  • Madrak1 - Jackhammer is always fun and on occasions, a DEF 11 (with Even Ground) with Whelps from it's shedding actually means your opponent misses or, burns through their Focus/Fury to make sure they hit.
  • Madrak3 - Shield Guard lets you use Whelp Shedding effectively.
  • Ragnor - Weight of Stone with Deafen and maybe primal means that you will likely hit successive attacks and kill anything in the game. Using Earth's Sanctuary also let's you play with LOS for your ranged element to function.
  • Grissel2 - Wailing on a huge base covers quite a large area.
  • Dire Troll Mauler - Rage to make those big meaty fists hit harder.
  • Pyre Troll/Slag Troll - Another animus damage buff, but on a cheaper model.
  • Troll Axer - A speed buff in Rush.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • The Mountain King is a big and debuffable target.
  • It really needs all its fury cleared off it

Tricks & Tips

  • Primal & Deafen make it effectively Mat 9 in melee so it can be very accurate when it wants to be.
  • Use Whelp Shedding to block charge lanes, by placing the whelp a max distance.
