Those skorne warriors preserved from oblivion as sacral stones by ancestral guardians sometimes receive bodies carved from stone and hardened clay, take up weapons heavier than any mortal could swing, and go forth to fight again as Immortals. They may die a hundred deaths only to have a new body crafted each time and rise again to stand alongside the living and wage war eternal.

Having shown a keen aptitude for communing with those preserved from the Void, extoller advocates are sometimes chosen to play a more direct role in the empire’s conflicts, employed to coordinate exalted on the battlefield. In addition to bolstering the combat effectiveness of immortals in their charge, extoller advocates will not hesitate to put themselves in harm’s way in order to fulfill the sacred duty of recovering and preserving sacral stones from fallen immortals and guardians.

Thoughts on Immortals

Immortals in a nutshell

Immortals without the Extoller Advocate are cheap, slow, and hard hitting - although not as hard as weapon masters. Surprisingly fast and flexible with Vengeance their ARM helps keep small arms fire away from them.

Thoughts on adding the CA

The Extoller Advocate is a living priest attached to the souls of the honored dead in their statues. As such its stats and abilties are entirely different.

The advocate provides the flexibility this unit needs. Grave Mist gives you a chance of staying alive, and Spirit Walker is the ace in the hole with the ability to walk through walls or, more importantly, charge through any enemies who aren't carrying magical weapons. It's recommended that all units are fielded as maximum units with the Advocate

Combos & Synergies

Two other models help them directly.

  • Ancestral Guardian - Ancestral Guardians have Resonance, speeding the Immortals up to a sensible speed.
  • Hakaar the Destroyer is their Veteran Leader.
  • Basilisk Krea - inside the Krea bubble they are ARM 19 against shooting. It's generally not worth the enemy trying (especially if they also have grave mist for DEF 15)

Their MAT is not especially great - but with any warlock that can give them boosted attack rolls they become quite startlingly good assassins, hitting almost all warcasters on 10s or less. There are three of these:

  • Supreme Aptimus Zaal also loves Ancestral Guardians, feeding them souls. Last Stand makes for some extremely brutal assassinations and that before they start spending rage tokens. He also Directs Souls
  • Zaal, the Ancestral Advocate directs souls to fill up the Advocate with just enough. His Aura of Power boosts their attack rolls, and they are extremely hard to hurt under his feat.
  • Supreme Archdomina Makeda can keep the advocate alive. Also on her feat turn they get boosted attack rolls; an interesting alternative for Praetorian Ferox
  • Lord Tyrant Zaadesh can use his feat to help them. Also they work well with inviolable resolve. He negates one of the immortals main weaknesses in not being able to take a charge very well.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • The enemy will try to snipe the Advocate and that can cause problem, especially around rough terrains.
  • Rather fragile as single wound model. Shooting in particular can do a number on them.

Tricks & Tips

  • Use Vengeance to alter angles to get LOS to a juicy target before you activate. Then, during your activation, go incorporeal and chop up the enemy support that thought they were safe.
  • Set yourself up behind a wall with Grave Mist and you'll be DEF 17 vs shooting and DEF 15 vs melee. Then, next turn, use Spirit Walker to charge through the wall.
  • Sac-Pawn can be useful for triggering vengeance on other units of immortals

Trivia

  • The Immortals share the same name as the ancient Persian Imperial Guard and are inspired by the Terracota Army in China. But, you know, actually move.
  • Unit released in Hordes: Evolution (2007)
  • CA released in Hordes: Devastation (2015)
