Magic Ability - This model can make the following Special Attacks or Special Actions. Doing so counts as casting a spell. If a Cost is listed, the model does not pay that cost. A cost might be listed because the Special Action or Special Attack is also a Spell listed on a Leader model.

If a model uses a Special Action or Special Attack to cast a spell in this manner, they cannot buy additional melee or ranged attacks unless otherwise stated in the spell, because using a Special Action or Special Attack is a Combat Action choice other than using Initial Attacks.
Blood Ritual - (Special Action) RNG 3: Target friendly living Faction model.

  1. If the model is in range, remove it from play.
  2. If the target model was removed from play, then choose one friendly Faction warrior model within 5 inches of this model.
  3. That model either gains Divine Inspiration for one turn, or d3 corpse tokens.
A model with Divine Inspiration gains an additional die on melee attack and melee damage rolls. Discard the lowest die of each roll.
Harmonious Exaltation - RNG 5: Target this model's Leader. If it is in range, once this turn when the Leader casts a spell, reduce the COST of the spell by 1.
Spell Slave - (Special Action or Special Attack): This model must be in its Leader's control range to make the Spell Slave special action. When it does, it casts one of the spells on its Leader's card with a COST of 3 or less. This model cannot cast upkeep spells or spells with a RNG of SELF or CTRL. When casting an offensive spell, Spell Slave is an arcane attack.

Question: Do abilites that affect the cost paid to cast a spell prevent it from being cast by Spell Slave?
Answer: No.
Explanation: The COST is not actually modified until it’s time to pay it. Additionally, the Spell Spave model is using a special action or attack to cast, so the model never pays a cost in the first place. Finally, abilities don't modify the cost of the spell on the card, they modify how much is paid to cast the spell.

LEGACY------------

Blood magic is the oldest of arcane practices in western Immoren, one the Tharn have mastered. While bloodweavers leap into the fray to wet their sacrificial blades, blood shamans are more reserved and focused, steeped in deeper sacrificial rites. They have long served the masters of the Circle Orboros, facilitating their magics through bloodletting, a talent also brought to the greatest warlocks among the Tharn. Linked by blood-sworn pacts, such shamans can borrow spells from those they serve.

Thoughts on the Tharn Blood Shaman

Tharn Blood Shaman in a nutshell

The Blood Shaman is a warlock support model with spell slave and harmonious exaltation whilst also being a melee combat solo, with a 2" reach magical spear, useful for scalpeling out incorporeal models, and able to be buffed from support such as Iona's feat, bringing them up to P+S 14/12 with 2 attacks. She should offer useful support to the warlock and be capable in combat.

Combos & Synergies

  • With Iona the Unseen, you can spell slave out Hunter's Mark as an extension of your charging Tharn in Devourer's Host. On top of this, on feat turn Iona is a force to be reckoned with, giving her Divine Inspiration increases that further as she likes to hang just before the front line, meaning she can go forward, kill something, Blood Boon Pursuit onto a troubling model or Lightning Strike (she can always just cast lightning strike for one) in order to keep her safe. Also the Shaman isn't scared to go in at +3 strength with rerolls to hit.
  • Kromac, Champion of the Wurm also likes Divine Inspiration as the faction's version of Butcher3, although with obvious differences, saying that though, he's not always seen in DH, doesn't play that far up until later in the game, and doesn't have any spells for spell slave to be of use.
  • Kromac the Ravenous his feat is a great way to assassinate Divine Inspiration makes it more reliable. She can also spell slave Rift for him
  • Anyone that wants a cost reduction to their spells will love Harmonious Exaltation

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Spell Slave is even more restricted than it sounds on paper.
As well as the "obvious" restrictions listed on the card (no upkeeps, no SELF, no CTRL, no COST 4+), you're also limited by the core rulebook's definition of "spellcaster" which renders a lot of spells as useless or near-useless. Because if the spell text includes a sentence that has "the spellcaster's battlegroup" or "the spellcaster's control range" you have to mentally delete that sentence from the spell effects (because the Shaman has neither a battlegroup or fury stat).
  • Blood Ritual requires a sacrifice to be made, sometimes the range on both the sac and the application isn't convenient for positioning, and sometimes you don't have the models to spare in the game of attrition to sacrifice.
  • Like all female Tharn her armour is poor. Even with 5 boxes stray blasts risk killing her.

Tricks & Tips

  • Keeping this model just out of reach against movement will make it considerably harder to hit the Blood Shaman in combat because of set defence.
  • Keep the Blood Shaman just in range of moving to provide any of its magic abilities; Blood Ritual requires planning a turn before, make sure you give yourself room to get it off.
