Steamroller CID

We played a 75 point Steamroller game, Mercs vs Trolls.  We tested with the intent of abusing the Fuel Cache and to evaluate the terrain placement rules.  We also discussed the measuring issue.   I played Trolls, My opponent ran Mercs, and I rolled initiative,  choosing to deploy second.

Terrain

We had a good amount of terrain available, however much of the 3d terrain was too large or ungainly for war machine.  We also had a full set of 2d terrain available.

1.  Building

2. Wall

3. Forest

4. Wall in forest

5.acid pit

6. Hill

7. Acid pit

8. Trench

At first, the terrain seemed sparse, but it seemed to make sense as soon as the zones were set up.

Looking back, the forest is unrestricted.  In placing the forest, it was placed within 6″ of both the table center and the 1st terrain piece, and more than 2″ away from any other terrain piece.  We followed RAW.

When we placed the wall on top of the forest template,  we ensured it was placed within 6″ of piece 1 and 2.  We also checked to ensure the wall was at least 5″ from piece 1, since the wall and the building were both restricted pieces.

We saw no rule restricting us from placing a restricted piece near or overlapping an unrestricted piece.  Figured this was intended, since it seems possible to have buildings in forests, walls on hills, etc.  I wonder if it would be allowable to place a Trench on a Hill?  RAW says no. Also note, this means you shouldn’t have a forest on a hill.  Other feasible combinations of unrestricted terrain exists, but RAW says no.

Moving on, we selected Standoff because we wanted to test both zones and objectives.

We both chose fuel cache.

I chose the side with the forest to deny his models a hiding place.  He deployed the bulk of his army centrally.  I planned on taking my right zone with the waters, reinforced by Horgle and the Stone.  When he deployed his Iridians opposite the longriders, I reconsidered.

Turn 1, things ran up.  Escort on mercs,   Stone got 2 fury, bison got ARM buff, Fire on the bomber.

Turn 2, the Iridians took to the zone, killing off a couple of my riders with help from the solos.

Two jacks contested my zone and blocked off the warders after they got knocked down.  An eliminator took care of a standing warder.

I countered by feating and taking out the two jacks.  I lobbed some fire from the bomber, via my fuel cache rather than Horgle’s upkeep.  Warders wrecked the second jack.  The Mauler took care of the second jack, charging through the objective. Longriders engaged the Iridians, and I damaged his objective with Pyre.

We both picked up 1 point.

Turn 3.

Magnus gets a bug up his butt and tries to take out some trolls, then the longriders get cleared and the warder gets cleared.  Three points Magnus to my one.

At this point, we’ve both been playing for two hours.  Although we didn’t officially run a clock, we agree that my clock would most likely be out by now, and end the game with a Magnus victory.

YELLOW:

I would like some clarification on whether it is intended that restricted terrain can overlap unrestricted.  Some spells will have trouble being cast if there is too much terrain.  I plan on testing some of that this weekend.  Janissa’s hill, for example.

Objectives can be targeted as friendly faction models.  I had the opportunity to bring my objective to ARM 22.  I’m sure this is the intent, but to help offset, I suggest giving objectives the Structure quality so that Brisbane 1 can get a bonus vs the objectives.

GREEN:

Passing through objectives.  It was helpful to charge through the objective.

The continuous fire had no major impact this game.  Made Horgle a touch more efficient.

Measuring.  We had no issues with template or marker placement.  Our meta typically doesn’t lay out multiple measurement templates, but sometimes you would see markers indicating threat range of various models that would linger between turns.
