Sloan1 vs Makeda1

Gun Mages vs anti-gun

Sometimes I ask myself why I am such a glutton for punishment.   Let’s take a bunch of POW 10 gun’s into battle against an army known for its armor.

Praetorian Keltarii – Leader & 9 Grunts: 15

Paingiver Beast Handlers – Leader & 3 Grunts: 5

It doesn’t look like much, but the Keltarii are darn near impossible to shoot.  Makeda herself can camp fury and let her army work for her.

The first match

This was a rough game.  My opponent had definitely done his homework.

Turn 1, the Blazers ran left, hoping to catch the unguarded objective for a point.  Bad idea.  Turns out the objective can’t be targeted until 2nd player’s 2nd turn.

Skorne took cover in the woods and behind the wall.

Turn 2, my blazers stall.  I think that was an error.  Probably should have pressed the flank and thrown something into the support pieces.  We are both respecting threat ranges.  Skorne can threat pretty well.  I try some shooting, but Carapace causes my bullets to bounce off, and the infantry is impossible to hit at DEF 19 on the woods.

I shouldn’t have tried to kill with the Cyclone.  One laid out some covering fire, but the other tried to take some aimed shots,  only to ricochet off tree limbs.

On his turn 2, the Keltarri start slashing my unpainted gun mages.  The titan smashes my objective.  Skorne takes 2 points.

Turn 3, I try to recover, shooting the Keltarii who pokes out, although their DEF was still ridiculous.   I tried to kill the gladiator, but with just 3 boosted shots, fell short.  I suppose that would have been a good time to feat.  I wasn’t go ing to get a clear shot on Makeda, so probably should have taken out the Titan with my feat.

Skorne doesn’t score…

….until his turn.

He takes out the Defender with no problem.  Then he finishes out the gun mages.  Turn over, Skorne has 4.

I try to contest, but have no chance.  Makeda is brave, sitting on fury and surrounded by shield guards.  Skorne wins.

Game 2

We reset the game, and I change up my list.  Skorne swaps out the spell slave for Orin Midwinter.

I shifted two Hunters under Kara, planning to actually use her feat.  Guess what? It didn’t matter.

Turn 1,  I spread out and try to make some shots possible.

Skorne encroached upon the zones.  Mages, hunters, defenders open fire.  His feat is up, so I’m unable to kill pretty much anything.

I’m trying to kill things, but failing.  Did you know that Carapace screws Hunters?

Skorne scores 2 points, and I am on my back foot again.  My guns aren’t hitting, and when they do, they fail to damage anything.  The stuff that gets broke gets healed anyway.

They score another on one of my turns, then pull 2 points on their next.  There was a brief bit of excitement at the end, when the Keltarri broke through to threaten Kara.  The defender in the above picture trampled through 3 guys, and got stopped by a free strike which had damaged it’s movement.

Little did I know, the trample should have been finished completely.  The rulebook says:

Crippled Movement: The model has its base DEF changed to 5. It cannot run, charge, or make slam or trample power attacks. A model that has its Movement system crippled while advancing as part of a charge or slam power attack immediately stops advancing, and its activation ends.

It doesn’t say Trample.  Furthermore, the trample rules say the Defender should have moved all the way, then made melee trample strikes, then had free strikes taken.  If it survived (it only had movement knocked out), it could buy melee attacks.

It wouldn’t have changed the outcome much.  Just delayed a turn.

Good games, lots to think about.

Maybe it was the terrain.  Maybe it was good Def vs ranged.  Maybe it was shield guards.  Maybe all of the above.  It leads me to question the viability of the gunline in mk3.

What traditionally strong gunlines do Cygnar run?  How do they fare in Steam ’17?  How does this factor into my Trollbloods, and the Kriel Company?  Will Cryx Ghost Fleet have similar problems?

As always, more play is required.  As I lament my ability to only play 1 or 2 games per week, I wonder how other gamers pull more games.  Are they employed?  Do they have kids?  What does our demographic look like,  and what does the serious gamer look like?
