Road to Texicon, Borka2

I love this model!  Why don’t I run him more often?  Honestly, I do not know.  I think it stems from one of my early losses with him, where my opponent simply backs up and waits for my feat to expire, then hacks out some sort of assassination run.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Borka, Vengeance of the Rimshaws is probably fine, and that my tactics need adjustment.  Unfortunately for me, all of Borka and Northkin is about to change, due to the CID beginning soon.  Texicon is only two weeks away at this point, and I loathe the idea of playing a new caster.  With the escalation tournament, I still feel Borka is strong.

If you’ve been following my blog, you might be surprised that I’m taking a second look at Borka’s list.  Privateer just released the War Wagon update, and I believe adding the wagon will shore up some of Borka’s issues.

Adding the War Wagon

Snow Shroud

Borka’s spell, Snow Shroud, targets any friendly Trollblood model or unit.  That applies to the War Wagon.  The wagon won’t benefit from concealment, but having protection from cold means it benefits from Borka’s feat.

General Wagon Shenanigans

Speed 7 means the wagon gets to be in Borka’s front line.  The balancing act I need to do with the wagon’s speed will be determining whether or not I get to alpha with the charge or not.  I can’t let the wagon out pace Borka, who will need the first turn to cast snow shroud.  So on turn 1, it looks like both Borka and the wagon are walking 7 inches, or actually, the wagon can move 10″, and Borka can cast, burn a little Fury, then charge 10″.  The beasts would all run 10″ to keep pace.

If everything goes well, I see the wagon crashing into the enemy, dropping a knockdown pie, and getting hit with the feat.  If the enemy pulls back, the wagon might get to pursue.  With repositioning backward, I will be tempting the stationary swing on anything with reach.  Remember, only the impact attack roll gains an additional die, not damage.  It is very possible to not kill things with the impact.

Adding Fire Eaters

With the theme broken after adding the wagon, I figure I might as well add another unit or solo with cold immunity.  Enter the Fire Eaters.  They are not supported by a pyre troll, so I will probably have the pyg in the back setting the leader and grunt aflame.

With this Infernal Ruling, I can declare a charge with all three, move, assault (pyg in the back shoots through front two), and if it is turn 1, I’ve failed my charge, but have two guys primed for turn 2.

Battlegroup

I really wanted a ton of heavies, but felt the addition of the wagon and eaters would help take care of units and light jacks or beasts.  I really don’t know what I’ll face at Texicon.  They had 100+ players last year according to their website.  Anything goes.  So I’m erring on the side of caution, and bringing a stone.  That means I have to give up a heavy for a light.   I decided the Mauler could go.

Rok has primal, so our beasts are going to hit hard and hit often, but rage next round.

The Earthborn is an Earthborn.  Enough said.

As for the rest, Blitzer is a favorite, Axer gives Rush, Lightning Troll brings a touch of Cygnar to the troll army.

The list scaling loses some points.  I admit, this isn’t the most efficient way to scale up to 75, but I think I’m keeping the most valuable models.  At 35, I have the wagon, two heavies and the Axer.  Blitzer and wagon are the lead pieces, followed by Axer, Rok and Borka.  There is no chance at points, so It’s a run to assassinate.

At 50, we get to add the storm and stone for 15 points, and we’re still a point down. I still have trouble contesting. Go, wagon, Go!

Obvious, Glaring Weaknesses

Contesting big scenarios.  Always problematic in small point games.

Assassination lists that shoot with high POW (Sloan).

Lists with telekinesis,  since they can point my raging models toward me.  Looking at you, Haley 2.
