Road to Texicon ’17 Madrak 3

Madrak 3

I’m still toying with lists for Friday’s 75 point event.  I think I’ve settled on Madrak 3.  I tested him into Skorne under the ranged theme and with those soul-abusing Immortals.

The game went surprisingly well.  Madrak likes the infantry.

Madrak doesn’t need to fill the stone completely.  He can push four fury to it, and spend one of his own on his aura, then run up.  The stone spends a fury and runs, and you have two bubbles, 5″ and 7″.  The Warders protect the stone from guns, then can head out to contest a flag or screen an objective.

Vengeance and the feat synergies pretty well.  The fennblades, protected mainly by the aura, are hard enough to kill with arrows, but with the feat up, their chances of living are even better.  The feat triggers an extra move, which can be used for blocking or setting up for another charge or vengeance.  If one of the guys gets killed, the group gets to move 3 more inches and take a swing.

The big pie plate is the Skorne caster/battle engine.  Cool thing about fennblades… no impact attacks.  In this scenario, Trolls were able to take 2 points from dominating, then controlling a flag, and a third from the objective.  The fourth and fifth would have been easily taken after the Warders and stone bearers secure the left side and my caster falls back to the right.

Skorne tried to assassinate but couldn’t get through with his caster.  The pie plate wasn’t all that useful in melee.  Had it been able to hit a group of softer targets, it would have been more successful, but the trolls were too tough.

Version 2

I reduced the number of fennblades by half, took out the Mauler and winter troll, threw in a mountain king.  I think that was it.

I learned two lessons here.  The first, is that I need to measure my distances during deployment to ensure Madrak can fill the stone.  He needs to be able to tear off toward the flag without worrying about the stone.  Against a melee focused army, he can pretty much fill up the stone without camping any fury.

The other lesson is that I can’t let the enemy up on control points.  I need to deploy to contest and control.  Otherwise, the trolls could get stuck, mired in the scrum. If the enemy army’s attrition is better than mine, i wont get an assassination chance, and I could be denied the chance to score.

In the picture, the trolls had pretty much captured the center of the board.  It took forever to clear out the Immortals.  And at the end, while the Skorne had lost more pieces, they won by control points.  They scored first, and hung onto the lead, choking out the trolls with clouds.

Version 3

My next iteration falls back on the first, with a minor change.

The Winter troll isn’t that necessary.  My initial reason for the Winter troll (besides points available) was insurance for Madrak vs stationary caused by cold.  But the bouncer can prevent stationary as well, so I decided on the Swamp Troll as another source of remove from play.  Yes, it is only on a crit, but the tongue can pull something close, and then a warrior can take it out, triggering remove from play.

Strengths

I plan on playing into Cryx, Circle Recursion, and Skorne infantry.  The list has tons of warrior models ready to remove things from play.  It is a quick moving list, ready to take the field, with a 12″ run from the fenns, 2″ extra deployment,  and pathfinder from the Fell Caller as well as on the fenns and champs during a charge thanks to their officers.  I’m not worried about cavalry.  The fenns solve that.  The Mauler helps the lights hit hard, and can take out a heavy if needed.  Multiple attacks from champs also take down heavy armor.

Weaknesses

Lightning concerns me.  So does soul collection.  My army has lots of souls.  I think pragmatic target selection can mitigate soul issues.  The lightning issue will require an army pairing to solve for that weakness.  Also, I worry about big armor.  I’m not worried about buffs, but natural armor may cause problems.  The pairing will have to be a list with big, heavy hitters that don’t worry about electricity or continuous effects.

I expect to practice more this weekend.
