• Carapace

Whether you’re a Cygnar player sporting a sweet gun line, or a Trollblood running Kriel Company,  you have to wonder how to handle Warbeasts and warjacks with Carapace.  Is it little more than cracking high armor? What is Carapace For those not in the know, Carapace is an ability that gives a +4 bonus to ARM against ranged attacks.  That includes sprays, AOEs, rockets, bullets, and so on, as long as the bullet, missile, what have you needed a RAT to hit. Why is it a problem? There are normally only a few models in the game with Carapace.  Skorne

  • Gunnbjorn vs Bloody Barnabas

Overview A difficult battle for my semi-ranged army, made more difficult by not using Gunnbjorn’s feat.  Here is another example of how not to play Warmachine. • Trollbloods, Oct 2017 Update

With the 2017 October live update, Trollblood players have a lot to digest. I’m facing mild overstimulus with the update. The change with biggest effect is probably the Krielstone, followed up by the Runebearer. The Stone makes upkeep trolls more viable in all the themes, and allows our warlocks to fight in the game, rather than serve as a stone battery. The Runebearer gives low fury warlocks the ability to actually catch things with their feat. High fury warlocks carry weight now. Third in the list would be Mulg as an arc node. There will be new tactics and threat

  • Decimator

The Good, the Bad… Stat line and weapons The Decimator is one of the more expensive Khador warjacks.   It has the same Stat line as the Juggernaut and Destroyer and other similar jacks (Khador jack makers reuse this frame all over the place). Like most of Khador’s jacks, the Decimator moves at a snail’s pace (SPD 4), but fights well when it eventually arrives.  Instead of an axe, the Decimator is outfitted with a rip saw.  The saw doesn’t do as much damage as the Juggernaut axe, but it does as much as the Destroyer (P&S 17). Instead of

  • Greygore Boomhowler & Co

The Good, The Bad… Stat Line Review At first look, you have a ten model unit with Tough and Combined Melee Attack.  Their stats are typical of melee Trollkin, with a MAT 6, P&S 12, 1″ axe.  Comparing with the Trollkin Kriel Warriors, the Boomhowlers hit more often and hit harder.   They’re on par with Fennblades,  but the Fenns have further threat with the 2″ blade and an extra 1″ SPD. They do carry a blunderbuss, which is a POW 12, 8″ gun.  However, their RAT 4 places them on par with Pygs, and they have nothing in their

  • No Quarter Prime 1: Urban Ambush

In the back pages of the new No Quarter Prime magazine from Privateer Press, three Trencher themed scenarios offer some narrative-style gameplay.  Each scenario offers a method of winning outside of the normal Steamroller packet, and includes terrain options that push players outside their normal six piece comfort level. Scenario Elements The Urban Ambush scenario offers a moving capture the flag style game with no warcaster or warlock to muck things up.  Deployment areas and terrain selection helps sell the idea of a group of reinforcements carrying a small but valuable package to a nearby encampment.  The reinforcements win if

  • Trolls into Trenchers

As I read through my No Quarter magazine, I can’t help ask myself how I would handle Trenchers with my troll army.  What problems do they present? How do they counter our strengths?  Are they stronger than us on scenario? What Do Trenchers Ask of Us? Expect lots of Tough units hiding in or behind smoke clouds.  Cygnar has the ability to add reposition to its units, who can then pop smoke and disappear from sight.  Band of Heroes obviously deals with tough, but how do we handle clouds? In my game against Caine 3 at Texicon last July, I

  • Anti-Armor in Trollbloods

Troll anti armor Let’s define armor. There are generally two types of armor. Jack/Beast armor, and infantry armor. The Armor faction is typically thought of as Khador, so we’ll use them as an example. Take a Juggernaut. ARM 20, 34 hit boxes. And for the unit, we have Man-O-War Shocktroopers, with ARM 21 under a +4 shield wall and 8 boxes. It seems heavy ARM is usually around 20, excluding shenanigans. Obviously, the toughest troll we have is the Mountain King. He’s POW 22 with Rage, 23 with stone. Best case scenario, your warlock casts Rage, so the king gets

  • Kriel Company, Horgle or Grim2?

Kriel Company  Horgle2 or Grim2 First, a disclaimer. At the time of this writing, the Northkin CID has not gone public. The Runebearer still costs 4, and doesn’t extend control range. We won’t know if it has changed for a month or two. We also don’t know if the Krielstone will be changed to its final CID version. And the Pyre Trolls are up for review as well, so we have some things to readdress after the Northkin CID goes public. So, in the current game state, we have two warlocks who play Kriel Company a little differently from each

  • Kara Sloan and Gun Mages

Captain Kara Sloan. Her name summons nightmare visions of a wall of Hunters, threatening your caster on turn 1.  I guess that’s a way to play her, but I can’t see it being very successful.  I am pretty sure most factions have a way to handle the gun line, and with terrain being what it is, there should be fewer LOS opportunities for Kara to exploit. She is dangerous. Her weapon of choice, a Magelock rifle named Spitfire, hits from 14″ and does a POW 12 with 3 dice of damage.  Sloan can boost the damage roll, for 4d6 at
