• Hill with a drop

I really like terrain.  I enjoy making terrain, and I think it makes the game more challenging and enjoyable.  I do not shy away from custom terrain, and still think Steamroller rules are a little restrictive.  Not being able to place a wall on top of a hill? Okay, I admit that Steamroller is a special case, and terrain needs to be standardized to keep certain crazy combos from skewing a match.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t get a little crazy at the LGS during a friendly match, right?  That is where custom terrain shines! Let’s take a look

  • Trenches

Hardest Wargaming Terrain Ever A few months back, one of the local game stores agreed to host a Warmachine Rumble.  These were going to be 35 point Steamroller games on the 30″ tables. I decided that the store needed more terrain, so took it upon myself to make trenches for the 10″ tiles we already made. Step 1 – Cut Trench In Warmachine, the trench is a 3″x5″ tile that provides cover and prevents blast damage.   I chose plywood as my tile material.  In retrospect,  I would like something thinner than the 1/8″ thick ply, and just as sturdy

  • War Wagon

The War Wagon.  Need I say more?   I love this model in so many ways, I think I will buy another. All paints were Vallejo, the grass woodland scenic and the mud was Vallejo.  To mage the bison connect to the yoke, I had to drill out and pin.  I think it worked pretty well.

  • Dhunian Knot

Trolls get to play with colors and schemes in ways that Cygnar and the more organized faction armies don’t.   I’ll base these models shortly, and they’ll be table ready. My paint job isn’t super high quality, but at this point I only need to be able to play at the “must be painted” tables. Tactics The Dhunian Knot doesn’t want to fight in hand to hand combat.  Against single HP dudes, they only have a rough 25% chance at a kill.  So what does this unit have to offer the Trollblood army? Healing At first, I thought the healing

  • Northkin Shaman

I painted up my Northkin Shaman twinsies this week. It was long overdue, as they’ve proven their worth in multiple games under Power of Dhunia. Tactics I’ve learned that they work well in a pair, creating 6” of cloud cover for Jarl to hide behind before his feat turn, and they have a 5” teleport to move them out of the clouds so they can take cover or pop up nearby. It’s like they get to run, and halfway through the run they drop a cloud. If they manage to kill something on a charge, they can disappear in a

  • Night Troll

The Night Troll looks so cool.  For his paint job, I started with blue spray primer (Rustoleum), layered Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue mixed 2:1 with Black, washed with black and highlighted again with Dark Prussian Blue (straight this time). The ropes and loincloth were Leather Brown over the black wash, US Grey for the stones, and initially Ivory for the spines, teeth, claws and eyes.  I went over the Ivory with Verdigris Glaze and went over his tongue and veins with the same. An hour for this guy. I will work his base later.  Some flocking, base markings, and he

  • Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood

I think this is one of my favorite models.  Yes, there are still a lot of details to hit, but his pose and gritty style makes everything palpable. This warlock is a little darker than the other shades of blue seen in my other models.  His rock studs are a muddy brown.  I did not tartan his clothing, because I figure he’s more of an outsider.  I hope we will see a Skuld 2 model with a few more Caine style gun mage abilities.

  • Troll Axer

This is a really cool model.  He’s got a huge mouth, awesome set of frills and packs his own lunch.  The Axer didn’t have hardly any mold line issues.  I wonder what the new plastic ones will be like. I plan on doing several colors within my army.  Not every troll will be the same shade blue.  As a matter of fact, I’ve always wondered why Privateer settled on trolls with pretty much a singular skin color.  In some of their artwork, I’ve seen trolls with more earthy colors, but for the most part blue reigns supreme. This Axer sports

  • Skaldi Bonehammer

Now here’s a troll that wants to party! Skaldi Bonehammer hails from the north, so I game him the traditional blue troll skin.  I gave him extremely light highlights, which show up almost white under the camera’s flash.  The model reminds me of this guy who I used to work with, who claimed he climbed a six foot fence while carrying a keg.

  • Blitzer

Behold, a finished Blitzer! Out of all the older, metal trolls, I think I like this one the best. I did find out later that he should have some ammo boxes on his back. Oh well.
