A Win for Horgle!

Bottom line up front, I suppose.

The idea going in was to increase my ability to damage troops, and to have a unit that didn’t need to be under the stone to be effective.  Nyss have good defensive stats, and can kill troops easily.  I lose out on free points, and the choice between beast and unit isn’t obvious.

The pro beast argument weighs heavily on boosted attacks or damage, powerful hits and multiple initials on a hard to remove platform.

The pro unit argument speaks to the ability to take the circle zones and to contest by throwing away a cheap trooper.  The unit also has a high volume of attacks, Nyss weapon masters hurts on a charge, and accurate shots with CRA threat a large piece of the board.

Runeshapers, the unit troll players seem to love to hate, actually have a lot of utility.  Knockdown, the Rock Hammer, and magic weapons play well into a variety of enemy forces.

I think I prefer playing into the Goreshade list as opposed to the Venethrax list.  The Venethrax list brings Mortality and a unit of Bane Riders at the loss of one of the Desecrators.  Goreshade isn’t without tricks, but probably would like an arc node for Bleed and Hex Blast.  The combination of Hex Blast and Lamentation could have crippled Horgle.

How it went

Pre Game

Cryx won initiative, chose to go second, giving me a forest on my side.  Yay, Nyss like the woods, although they don’t have Prowl.  I deployed with stone lined up behind the center obstruction, battlegroup split to either side, Runeshapers left, Nyss right.  Scenario was Standoff.

Cryx spread out, battlegroup centered, warriors left and right, engine to my left.

Turn 1

Power of Dhunia starts with upkeeps in play.  I had Firestarter on the left bomber, Solid Ground, and Invioable Resolve on forward unit of Runeshapers.  I gave them the +2 ARM instead of a bomber because I knew they’d be out of the stone’s influence, and have to contend with Dark Shroud.

Trolls ran, trying to spread out a bit to avoid the eventual corrosion AOEs.   Stone ran, bunched, but with Protective Aura and Spirit Chaser, having all of Horgle’s Fury.  I’m really looking forward to CID update to trolls.

Nyss hit the forest, poised to slaughter any warriors entering the zone.

Turn 2

Left bomber took a shit at warriors on hill, auto missed and deviated into a group of them.  Blast did nothing, but they were lit aflame.  A second blast caught Goreshade.  Horgle moved over the Firestarter to the right troll, and dropped his last fury onto the stone.  The right bomber deviated onto a bunch of warriors, lighting them on fire.

Nyss hung out on the edge of the zone, and after the game, my opponent said I probably could have moved them in for a point.  If I had gone second, then that would have been viable, but I really didnt want to give them up to an AOE or warrior charge.  Two Runeshapers manage to scratch the Engine for 2 boxes.

Cryx rolled fire, losing some warriors who failed to tough.

Desecrators started dropping corrosion AOEs, but nobody took blast damage.  The left bomber took some damage.

It probably would have benefited Cryx more to shoot the pyre troll or Runeshapers.  Cryx charges the pyre troll with the Engine.  The poor troll survives with 1 box, and the Engine is burning.  We both score 1 point.

Turn 3

The order of activation becomes super important here.  I have to decide on how to get rid of the Engine.  Horgle pulls in Fury.  He powers all his upkeep spells.  Nyss go first, filling the right zone, to take the point at the end of my turn.  I didnt want to forget them.  The Stone moves up, avoiding corrosion, powering the protective aura and Stone Strength.

Horgle activates.  He dumps Fury to the stone and feats.  I can’t wait for the self-powering stone.  I also wish Horgle could use the pyre troll’s animus on the pyre troll. The Knot heals the pyre for 2 and puppet masters the pyre and left bomber.

Lamentation forces the pyre to use an extra fury for Flaming Fists, which brings his damage to 14 +1 from the stone =15.  That is dice -3 on the Engine,  and Two hits do really well.  The last damage roll is exactly 3.  Puppet master allows a reroll, scoring enough to kill the Engine.

Runeshapers clear the left zone.  Bomber troll advances, and destroys the enemy objective with two direct hits, with boosted damage.  I end my turn, scoring 4, and denying my opponent his 1.  So I lead, 5-1.

Cryx tries to contest, and even takes a shot at Horgle.  Desecrators kill the bomber and Pyre.  Warriors try to kill Runeshapers.  They kill 1, knocking down that warrior because of the Chronicler’s sad story.  Warriors flood the right zone.  It’s too late.  We both go up 1 point to 6-2.

Turn 4

I run a Krielstone Stone Scribe into his rectangle.  I end my turn, going up 1 point to win 7-2.

Final Analysis

Cryx could have played more aggressively,  but (as my opponent pointed out in the discussion afterward) my bombers were doing well with killing warriors.  I also out threatened the Nyss zone, and Spirit Chaser prevented the Engine from running behind (through) my army to put pressure on Horgle.

Had he feated earlier, to replenish the fallen warriors with new ones, and kept his engine in reserve, focusing on my Runeshapers with his warriors, then killing bombers with the Desecrators,  he may have had a better game.

For Horgle, there is still the problem with Armor.  Does he keep his battlegroup or try to squeeze in a Mauler?  The Nyss are good, but would a Farrow Brigand unit serve the same purpose?

The Brigand may weather ranged blast attacks better than Nyss.  Prey is sweet.  Feralgeist is something I haven’t tried before, but could give me an extra turn or two after a warbeast dies.

I really like how the allowance of minions opens up the themes.  I also like the Dhunian Knot change.  It seems to reward good fury management.  I do think the points of trolls for free models probably should drop down to 20.  It would further promote inclusion of minions and other units.  Or, change the requirement to “every 25 points of Trollblood Warbeast or Runeshaper units.”  In my case, it would give me 3 solos.
