Gunnbjorn vs The Heretic

This is a battle in which I made one major error, and should have lost the game.  My opponent played well, making a strong assassination bid.  He had a 92% chance of success, but Gunnbjorn somehow survived assassination and squeaked out a win.

Set up

Breakdown!  No fancy stuff here.  Difficult to jump way ahead on scenario.  Two circles and a rectangle for scoring.  My strategy was to flood the rectangle and right circle with kriel warriors, and walk Gunny’s battlegroup up the center.

Quadrant method (dividing the table into fourths,  and placing 4 pieces, 1 in each quadrant, but within 5″ of table center, then 4 more, each within a quadrant and within 5″ of the center of its quadrant).  We had two buildings for blocking LOS.  Two trenches, an acid pit and hill filled out the remaining pieces.

I’ve pretty much decided on Gunnbjorn into Grymkin.  If the Grymkin aren’t shooting, then they are slinging spells.  They have plenty of tough units, so Band of Heroes is the drop of choice.  I’m hoping my Band is different enough from the other troll bands that I can catch a few people off guard.

Today, Gunnbjorn showed up with some borrowed Farrow Brigands and a few unusual trolls.  Overall, I’m happy with how the list played, but I still want to try a Sea King version.

I had model dyslexia when I packed, and neglected to bring the chronicler or Blitzer, so they were represented by a Dhunian Knot member and bomber.

I hate feeling like I’m playing points down, but I feel the Brigands will be a force multiplier.

The Game

The Heretic took initiative, choosing his table edge and allowing Trollbloods to make the first move.

I think he gave me the good side.  I had a hill and rubble.  He had two trenches.  The hill would be better for my shooters.  I believe his thought was to prevent my guys from sitting in trenches at DEF 16.

I deployed first, setting my Kriel Warriors right, Brigands way left, and battlegroup in position to take the hill and rectangle.

He deployed with pigs in the middle, pumpkin heads to my right, a unit of guns in the middle, and one unit to the left.  Solos went left as well, and battlegroup stayed fairly central.  Right after the picture, he remembered the tree had AD, and as soon as he finished, the Brigands preyed the tree.

Turn 1

I did not take a picture of turn 1.  Kriel Warriors ran, the stone walked, Powered up 2, burned 1.  Gunnbjorn cast snipe on Dozer, dumped fury on stone.  Brigands walked and dug in.  I should have ran them.  There was no way his dudes could have gotten to my Brigands.  Oh well.  I throw a random shot out with Dozer, and it deviates away from everything.

He runs his stuff out, puts Fury spell on the pigs.

Turn 2

Brigands advance, kill the tree at range, reposition into rubble.  Prey the Gorehound.

Gunnbjorn advances, feats, tries to kill something, but can’t.  Explosivo on Blitzer.  Guided Fire.  Stone walks, uses stone strength, generates, is full.  Blitzer drops a dude, injures others, triggering tough. Winter troll takes out 4 hollowmen in the trench.

Fun fact.  Hero’s Tragedy does nothing vs RFP from snacking or from Bag Man.  This is because the knockdown only triggers if a model is destroyed.  I didn’t realize that, so kriel warriors had the chronicler tell a Tragedy before running into the zone.  Fell Caller preps for some action.

Killing off dudes with AOE,  spray, and machine guns.  Love it. If I replace my battlegroup, I lose spray and machine gun, but get a good AOE.

The two Brigands die to Hollowmen and Longfellow.  Pumpkins slam into Kriel Warriors,  and manage to kill a few.  Pigs charge Winter troll, kill the troll, but two pigs are frozen.  The Mauler took a hit, but laughed.  Grymkin score 1 point.

Grymkin 1, Trolls 0

Turn 3

I mess up my order a bit here.  Last turn, I offered targets, trying not to trigger Shadow near my warlock.  But the two pigs were too tempting.  I should have started with the kriels, then Mauler, but I had the Mauler act almost last. Here’s how it went down.

Brigands hog wild the Gorehound, killing the beast with ranged before charging the preyed Hollowmen.  They kill a few, leaving three near each other, and reposition to threat a couple.

Gunny shoots at the big cage guy, and crits.  The thing is thrown way back, and a dude is killed.  Kriel Warriors kill a few more, fell caller sprays 1.  Only 7 pumpkin remain.  Dozer shoots the grouped Hollowmen, nearly clearing the zone.  All that’s left are 2 Hollow men and 1 Lord Longfellow.  Mauler shifts left, and the Shadow pops out (represented by the tree).

Ugh.  I probably lost the game at this point.  Mistake made, I play through.  Mauler Rages, kills three pigs.  This would have been a perfect time to be allowed to throw my own model.  I could have moved Blitzer up and thrown Gunny to safety.  But that isn’t how the game works now, so Blitzer instead bulldozed another pig, into the fire wall, killing it.  Blitzer throws some slugs into the Heretic, who has 7 boxes left. He kills the last pig.

The Heretic thinks he can take out Gunny.

All he has to do is throw fury on the beast, a shadow-created skin and moans, and lay 6 attacks into Gunnbjorn.

Dudes charge, not doing much.  My guys are crowded in, so that’s good.  He has the heal all card for next turn.  The S&M misses his first two attacks.  The purchased attack hits hard, filling 1/3 of Gunny’s boxes.  The next purchased attack misses, but the remaining to hit, and the final kills Gunny, or would have.  Gunny is tough!

That was, according to Odds Machine, an 8% chance of Gunnbjorn surviving.  I cannot stress enough that my opponent played very well, and made few errors in this game.  Also, if I had resigned, I never would have enjoyed the retaliation.

Turn 4

The Mauler and Blitzer will frenzy check.  Mauler can’t hold it together, and smashes a Hollowmen dude.  Fell Caller reveille, followed by Gunnbjorn bazooka on the little guy standing in front of the trench, practically base to base with the Heretic hiding in the Trench.

Gunny crits.  They’re thrown two inches, knocked down, the hollowman disintegrates, explosivo happens, and a path opens up.  Dozer takes a shot.  Blitzer moves around, makes initials, which get shuffled off, and buys 4 attacks to end the Heretic’s reign of blasphemy.

The Brigands did well.  I want a full unit.

I think the battlegroup was effective.  I need to hold the Mauler back a bit.

I still want to try Sea King.  The inclusion of the Sea King would mean losing Rage.  I would also need to deploy a little more compactly, so the Sea King has a screen.  In Band of Heroes, I wouldn’t get many beasts in the army.

For Sunday, then:
