• Road to Texicon, Ragnor test, v2

Things don’t always work.  In last night’s test game, things didn’t work. I played into a merc list. We played a 75 point Steamroller game, Mercs vs Trolls.  We tested with the intent of abusing the Fuel Cache and to evaluate the terrain placement rules.  We also discussed the measuring issue.   I played Trolls, My opponent ran Mercs, and I rolled initiative,  choosing to deploy second. Bearka 35 pointer The guys at the local store didn’t want to play 75 tonight, in an effort to get more games in and try some new dudes out.  I’ve struggled with rumble and small point Steamroller due to the support I’ve felt is needed with the Troll army.  I also get stuck on model count.  In general, the number of models trolls bring to the table at x points is fewer than other factions.  I’ve read many complaints about how unfair and unbalanced that feels, but I don’t believe the math supports the feeling of unbalance.  I’ll write about

Nyss are almost Ready! Each model received a bit of a touch up, and the bases received a bit of autumn flocking. Bowstrings Initially, I was ready to call it quits.  However, I couldn’t let the lack of bowstrings go without some sort of solution.  I wanted to have some of the Nyss Hunters drawing back a bow, and I was ready to cut and fashion an arrow out of a paperclip and clay, but I realized it would look utterly ridiculous.  To begin with, the archers’ drawing hands are way beyond their shoulder.  I was taught to pull to

Extra time means more paint! The straps and accents on the quiver and sheaths picked up a coat of German Uniform, and the bow picked up a nice shade of Beige Brown.  Silver highlights were next for the buttons, studs, what have you. More Green! Ouch!  I don’t have any green in the bottle to help spiff things up.  However, I do have a nice glaze that I think will work out.  So I mixed Deep Green with Verdigris Glaze at a 3:1 ratio.  It’s nice and bright.  I think these Nyss Hunters are working out pretty well. Green, Brown… Now What? What now, indeed?  Well, the quivers and sheaths are obvious places for an accent, and I decided firmly on a deep red.  Not too bright, so it doesn’t drown out anything, but just the right amount of color. Paints Vallejo Model Color 70.814 Burnt Red

Cloaks are Brown Another shade of brown on the cloaks, slightly lighter than the last.  This one is also from the Model Color line, off their Panzer series of paints. Paints Vallejo Model Color 70.826 German Camo Med Brown

Shadows in the Cloaks I think I use a lot of this particular color.  German Camouflage Black Brown.  It is exactly as it seems – black with a touch of color to keep it from being unnaturally black. Armor Next up: the armor!  Keeping things moving, I hit the armor with a few thin coats of Deep Green.   Paint Vallejo Model Color 70.822 German Camo Black Brown 70.970 Deep Green

Skintones & Swords I found an old bottle of Reaper Miniatures Master Series paint called Fair Skin.  Fifteen years ago, that paint mixed into a rosy peachy color, and to my surprise, still does today.  I tempered it with Vallejo Model Color Verdigris Glaze, in a 2:1 mix of Reaper:Vallejo.  Next, the Nyss Hunters took a splash of grey wash.  Their swords also took a hit from the Reaper/Vallejo mix, for an eerie greenish coloring along the wavy part. Armor Their leathers would take a hit of Military Green before my hour was up.  I hadn’t decided yet what was going on
