Calandra1 vs Maelok1

I feel privileged to have played into a Top Level Warmachine player at the Steamroller last weekend.  I won’t name drop, but will say that even though it was an uphill game into someone with much more practice than me, it was still a very pleasant game.  Although it was a loss on paper, it was a win for me.

I’m still struggling with pairings and list selection.  I probably should have stuck with my original Calandra/Borka plan, but wound up sticking Madrak2 in as Calandra’s battle buddy.  Reason being was that I figured weapon master Raiders could be neat, and I put in a couple extra beasts.  Turns out, both lists suffered simply by having units on the board.

And my opponent…

And

I believe I guessed wrong.  Calandra was going to be bad into either list.  Maelok1 has Mortality.  The Dr. Has 4 heavies with a Gorax, which has primal, I think.  So Star-Crossed won’t help me here.  Madrak may have fared better, assuming I could pull an alpha. I am thinking he’d be better with Fennblades, as their 2″ reach should allow more berserking during feat turn.

Game on!

Turn 1

I won initiative, and went second, picking a side without the building in the middle.  My bears and pygs were set to ambush.  I figured he’d try to claim a circle.  I didn’t realize this was one of those lists that wanted to swarm the center.  I figured with all the infantry, he would spread out.

I also thought that the Pygs would be spotting for the Raiders.

After turn 1, gators running and raiders taking a shot or two, barely scratching their thick hides.

Turn 2

Well, dang.  Mortality goes out on the Raiders, and the undead gators get to reroll attacks.  They have 2 attacks per turn, one at 2″.  So they can threat me, I don’ get retaliatory strike with Champions, or Valka.  The Raiders are all killed, save one dude.

Bears and pygs try to take a circle, but fail. The gators are too far away from the bears, and POW 11 guns don’t hurt much.  Gators start pulling away on score, as the rock thing sits on a flag, and mine is contested.

Turn 3

I believe I missed a photo.  More killing happens; some gators and champions die. He scores another point on his turn and on mine.  I just can’t get to his flag through all the gator meat. 3 points, Gators.

Turn 4

He turns part of his army to face the Pygs and bears.  He clears bears, but not pygs. 4-0, gators.

I manage to clear the right circle with a Mauler throw and Calandra Befuddle. I’m determined to not make this a clean sweep.  Bears finally engage gators, and take down 1, but only the one bear and handler had their target in melee, leaving the last bear to his own.

Score, 5-1 Gators.

Turn 5

Gators work on the left zone, leaving some pygs alive.  He contested the right, and tried to clear my flag.  There weren’t enough gators left.  But it didn’ matter.  His flag is still his, and by contesting, he scores 6-1, and wins.

Closing thoughts

A Band of Heroes Fennblade and Kriel Warrior list with Madrak2 might have played out better.  I know that Madrak1 is the favorite, but I still believe he and Calandra have a similar strategy, making things hard to hit. As the gators didn’t seem to struggle with hitting, the +2 DEF from Even Ground wouldn’t matter much.  My other consideration, Borka2 may have had play, especially in a long rider variant. Long riders like units, in my experience.  The feat would have been negligible, as the trolls really didn’t have trouble hitting (except for the long stretch of one’ and twos that Calandra let me reroll).

My opponent played probably the cleanest game I’ve ever seen.  I aspire to be as smooth and well-versed in the list I bring to a match.
