Calandra vs Scaverous

The local Cryx guy is testing new warcasters,  and today’s Dragon Father representative is the Lord Exhumator Scaverous.  I won’t claim my recent experiments with Calandra are influencing my group, but I do find it coincidental that three of us are all messing with dice manipulating casters.

Same as before.  This time, I realize Valka is a good Bullet Dodger target.  However, I am considering other changes…more on that later.

Knowledge of the Damned allows Scaverous to force rerolls of enemy and friendly model attack and damage rolls.  He does this as long as he has a soul token.  Looking at his spells, the Feast of Worms counters the stone’s ARM buff.  Exarnate RFPs on boxed, so I still get to tough, unless a Desecrator melee first.  Telekenisis would be a problem with arcnodes.  Calandra is the only piece in the army who has to worry about Icy Grip, but I think Scaverous wants to assassinate or engage late game, so this may be a problem.

He has 6 warjacks (deathjacks, helljacks, bonejacks, whatever Cryx calls them).  The Desecrators throw AOE shots, with POW 7 blasts and a lingering corrosion hazard.  In addition, they pick up a focus for being near the bane warriors.   How are these things only 14 points?  The arcnodes could be a problem.

I’m not worried about the bane warriors hitting, because they don’t have a MAT buff and my cold resist ignores icy grip.  The knights, however, are a pain.  Boosted attacks on a charge eat right through Star-Crossed.

Game

Trolls go first this time.  Turn one goes as well as anyone can expect.  Turn two takes F – O – R – E – V – E – R.

Bears ambush on the left, and Pygs on the right.  Bears whiffed,  only taking out a single Rider, and smacking around the light jack.  Pygs tear through the warriors, even with tough.  They do manage to take out the Recursion officer.  Raiders continue the push, knocking out almost the whole army.

Cryx kicks back, destroying the bears, and setting up to take the left circle, and they try to edge into the right.  They get some contestors,  and Scaverous brings a dude into the warrior unit.  Ranged attacks from the warjacks kill a couple Raiders.  The Warriors split to deal with pygs.  Trolls take a point.

Turn 3

I made an error, moving the Earthborn into charge range of the jacks.  I should have used the Champions to charge into them.  The Raiders almost cleared the zone, failing to kill the arc.  The warriors unit dies, so there’s no more bringing them back.  The pygs did a wonderful job harassing from behind, and although the bears got wiped, they forced him to deal with that side before closing in.

Riders move into the zone, with one engaging the Brawler (Mauler proxying).  Wraith tries to finish the Brawler, who lives with 2 hit boxes.

Trolls gain another point, and sit at two.

Turn 4

I take out the wraith engine with my Mauler, and make a play for his caster.  The champions can’t quite get there, and Valka doesn’t get the job done, so I make a play for zone control.  I take out the arcnode, befuddle a Desecrator, then do the same the bane rider from the rectangle.  Two more points make four.

Scaverous recognizes the opportunity for assassination.  He drops the AOE, and blasts Calandra with everything.  Failing tough wins him the game.

Final thoughts

The list is good.  It asks a definate question.  If you have no way to boost attacks, or you don’t bring a MAT/RAT fix that can bring the MAT/RAT to 8, then you’re in trouble.

That being said, I would like a way to boost my own MAT on Raiders, or add retaliatory to the Champs.  Champions can wreck heavies, but without the Champ Hero giving them Retaliatory Strike, Sanguine Bond feels lackluster.  It does allow them to get shot once or twice.

I don’t feel like the Brawler is worth the points without a DEF debuffer.  I would rather spend the fury on additional attacks than boosting attacks or using the animus.  Probably not overcosted in a vacuum, but not a good fit for this list.  Mauler or Rok are better alternatives.  I’d like the Earthborn to remain, but if I shift up to Rok, then it has to move out of I’m going to squeeze in a solo.

The question is what kind of solos can I squeeze in.  Do I attach a sorcerer or two?  That could help with enemy upkeeps.  Or, should Eilish Garrity run with Calandra to add some spell hate?  Is Valka really worth it?  He would be so much better if he could give out a buff of some sort.  I like him with Bullet Dodger.  Fell Caller can hand out a MAT fix or make things stand, but unit pathfinder isn’t  needed in the SotN because most units have native Pathfinder.

With beasts, I prefer the Mauler to the Brawler.  The Earthborn is sweet, especially if he can get a DEF bonus.  But if I leave out the Mauler, do I have enough oomf to wreck heavies? Too many options.

Calandra Truthsayer, Oracle of the Glimmerwood – WB: +27
– Trollkin Runebearer – PC: 0
– Dire Troll Mauler – PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 15)
– Earthborn Dire Troll – PC: 14 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12)

Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North – PC: 0
Trollkin Champion Hero – PC: 0
Fell Caller Hero – PC: 5

Pyg Lookouts – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10
Northkin Raiders – Leader & 9 Grunts: 15
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes – Leader & 5 Grunts: 9
– Northkin Elder – PC: 3
Northkin Bear Handler & Battle Bears – Bear Handler & 2 Battle Bears: 10
Trollkin Champions – Leader & 4 Grunts: 16
– Skaldi Bonehammer – PC: 5

This option gives me offensive output from the Mauler.  Both the Mauler and EBDT remain late game pieces.  The Champs lead in.  Fell Caller for pathfinder on Champs, or MAT fix on Raiders.

As an alternative, the Fell Caller can come out.  The geist can keep a flag, and even make a warbeast stick around in the right situation.  Sorcerer can keep the Champs around, and remove upkeeps.

The Mauler/EBDT can be swapped for Rok/Bouncer, and any of the 5 point options can go for Eilish.

Saturday, I will run the first option.  I believe it works, and the Fell Caller giving pathfinder to champs help with navigating terrain when the charge isn’t possible.
