Calandra vs Goreshade3

First outing

The last game, with Gunnbjorn, combined with all the Madrak1 love had me thinking about my lists, caster synergy, and weaknesses in Gunnbjorn’s army.

Gunnbjorn messes with ranged armies for a turn, but outside of that, doesn’t help his melee troops.  He also does absolutely nothing for minions.  I think he’ll do okay with the Sea King, but not in Band of Heroes.

Calandra’s List

I decided to test out the Champions, figuring a high defense unit would benefit from Bullet Dodger.  The Highwaymen might be cute here as well, but I feel the need to run Band of Heroes rather than Kriel Company.

I’m sticking with the Farrow Brigands.  They did well before, and I think I’m on my way to getting them from effective to superior in terms of being able to hold a zone.  Additionally, they benefit from Calandra’s Star-Crossed.

Since I need to throw that Star-Crossed as wide as possible, the Runebearer is auto-include.  Mauler, Bouncer and Night Troll fleshed out the group, with Krielstone Bearer, Kriel Warriors, Champ Hero, Chronicler and Fell Caller rounding off the support.

Kriel Warriors are listed as support, as they are merely ablative armor for the Champion unit.  They get hit, die, opponent gets knocked down because of chronicler, and champs charge in.

The setup

Terrain placed via cluster.  We picked Standoff.

The Game

Deployment

Opponent took initiative and chose sides.  I deployed with the Brigands far left so they could move around the building.  Calandra centered herself to maximize Star-Crossed.  Warriors and champs took to the right, Krielstone hung out with Calandra and the battlegroup stayed slightly left of center.

Goreshade centered himself, cavalry opposed the Brigands, warriors set themselves against warrior/champs, and a wraith flanked each side.

Turn 1

Trollblood

Warriors, Champions, solos ran straight up.  Brigands ran to the side of the church.  Stone activated, walking, building fury, and burning fury for protection and spirit chaser. Calandra filled stone and cast Star-Crossed.  Mauler, Night Troll ran.  Bouncer walked and riled.

Cryx

Models ran about, occulation went on the cavalry, scything touch on warriors, infernal machine on a seether.

Turn 2

Trollblood

Farrow Brigands took to the edge of their circle, skirting it so they could contest, and spreading in such a way that a tough roll would thwart a charge.

Warriors ran into the zone, screening for the stone and champs.  One got too close to a Seether, who promptly countercharged.   Oops on my part.  I should have put the Hero’s Tragedy from the chronicler on the warriors before moving.  The Seether got a kill, and the Champions charged in, with one getting a couple hits on the Seether.  Mauler slid in to finish the job, and I was caught off guard on how quickly the Warjack was vanquished.  I forgot to rile the Mauler.

Calandra made sure the Champions could dodge bullets, and cast Star-Crossed again. Bouncer and Night Troll positioned to defend their warlock from the oncoming cavalry attack.

Cryx

Things look grim for the trolls.  The warriors kill some Kriel, the wraith kills the champion hero, and plops out a mini-wraith.  Goreshade juggles scything touch.  He pops his feat, and I watch as half the Farrow die to cavalry charges (2″ blades seem cheesey).  Mauler takes a huge hit, and Night Troll dies to the Wraith engine and Cavalry charge across acid.

I question whether the AOE travels with the cavalry, but we play like it does.  Also, I question whether the AOE triggers a check if something wanders into it, but we play like it does.  There is now a question in the rules forum.

Score: Trollbloods/Cryx 0-1

Turn 3

Trollbloods

I was so wrapped up in the controversy over turn 2, that I forgot to shake stationary on Mauler.  Fell Caller clears the mini-wraith.  Champions kill a wraith engine. Bouncer almost kills the other.  Farrow light up the cavalry.

Score: Trollbloods/Cryx 1-2

Cryx

Bouncer dies. Calandra is short on fury. Shriek trampled. Farrow barely survive. Wraith repairs. Mockery of life makes more cavalry.

Score T/C 2-3

Turn 4

Trollbloods

Mauler takes out the last wraith engine. Farrow almost clean up cavalry thanks to befuddle turning them around. Champions take a counter charge from a seether.  I forgot order of activation again, and didn’t give them hero’s tragedy.  No matter.  I put it on after the fact.  Shrike dies. Many warriors die.  Trollbloods gain a point, and since Farrow are in the rectangle,  they contest. Star-Crossed goes back up.

Score T/C: 3-3

Cryx

Goreshade kills Farrow, and takes back his zone. He brings back cavalry.  Kills some champions with Seether.  He contests my rectangle.  Mauler dies to a cavalry model.

Score T/C 3-4

Turn 5

Trollbloods

Fell Caller kills the warriors contesting via spray.  Yay! Champs turn to do zone control and brace for next turn.  The Seether counter charges into my zone.  Champs press on, killing warriors. They wont score this turn, but there isn’t anything stopping them later.  Calandra befuddled Seether out of the zone.  Farrow kill off cavalry, and prey Goreshade.

Score T/C 5-5

Turn 5

Goreshade charges the rune bearer, impacting the stone scribe.  Tough happens, and he is stopped, but is in range because 2″ is real.  He kills the bearer, kills a stone scribe, almost kills Calandra. Star-Crossedis working against him.

He concedes, since there is a good chance that the Farrow will take out Goreshade.

Conclusion.

Calandra, where have you been all my troll life?

I considered retooling to add another champ unit, but after much consideration, have landed on this.

Why more warriors? Tar pit. No fell caller, sure, but it’s a soak unit. And champions don’t really need the caller much.  Calandra knows the warriors will fall, it’s why she brought champions.

Earthborn can get super DEF with water on the board.  Rise and reposition on kriel warriors.  I don’t like this one as much to be honest.

If I see guns, I may have to run Borka.
