Borka2 vs Magnus1

Borka2 & Double Long Riders

The idea of two cavalry units in an army is not new.  Some armies and factions love double cavalry.  The question I’ve been tossing around lately is whether Trollbloods have an effective double cavalry army waiting to be unlocked.

Since I am primarily a Mk3 player, I don’t have much in the way of experience from which to draw.

So off to the internet!  Problem is… there isnt much out there on running double long riders.  And to make matters worse, most of the info out there is based on the mk2 version of cavalry.  The only thing left to do is play them until my friends get sick of seeing them on the board.  Here we go with my first game.

My first game with double riders

This version lacks a Krielstone Bearer.  Borka tends to outrun everything while riding his bear.  Beasts at speed 5 barely keep up, running along side while Borka casts Battlecharged and Snow Shroud.  The stone, if it generates Fury, lags by 5″.  If it runs on turn 1, it can generate turn 2, and should only lag 2-3″.

The stone also requires attention to order of activation.   It requires Borka to activate, cast something, and load the stone.  All that means I’m slow on my first turn, and keeping everyone inside auras means we don’t threat as hard as this list demands.

I really like the irregulars, but the last time I faced double Siege Crawler, it was under Madhammer, where I feel Borka has a more difficult time.  The crawlers still can remove stealth from two of my models during Borka’s feat, and that means I have to be careful screening high value targets like Rok and Borka.

Game Analysis

Unfortunately,  I didn’ take enough pictures of this game to do a play by play.

I went first, placing each cavalry to each side, and Borka’s battlegroup center.  A fell caller hung near each of the long riders for pathfinder, but only one unit needed it due to water.

The Seige Crawlers set up opposite, battlegroup in the middle, and a unit of dwarves on each engine.  The Nyss hung to my left.

Borka walked up, cast battle charged and Snow Shroud.   The long riders edged into the two circle zones and valka took to the flag.  I made an error, I think, by having the brawler run through the lake.  Otherwise, I was pretty pleased.  I knew Borka’s army would take some shots, but was confident that the riders could cause some trouble.

On the second turn, the riders on the left set up to contest the zone and threaten the center.  The right riders claimed their circle and threatened the center.  Borka’s group moved to threat the enemy flag, and valka kept on his flag.

I got caught up with some counter charging, as he moved in some dwarves to tear down Rok.  Borka feats, but presents himself to that murderous elf, who strips him of fury.  A few shots get thrown at him, but he holds on, due to the armor boost given by Defiant Rage.  There aren’t enough boosted gunshots to really hurt Borka, and there weren’ enough dudes getting into combat.  Having the jacks freeze helped things.

When all is said and done, Valka takes a point on the flag, and the riders on the right score on that zone.  Rok’s spirit is gone, as is his body.  The Earthborn is damaged as well, but firing on all aspects.

Order of activation becomes super important. If Borka can clear the flag, then he can win on this turn, since the trolls lead 2-0.

First, the longriders on the right slam a Warjack, which rolls over the elf assassin.  The slam isn’t followed up.  The long rider instead repositions into the zone.

Next, Rok eats as many dwarves as possible, healing up as he fed.  With his spirit fixed, he Primals the Earthborn.  The Earthborn throws the second jack directly away, using the boosted strength to his advantage, then buys attacks on Dougal, the merc solo.  He misses.  Should have boosted.  Always boost. Believe it or not, sixes can be elusive.

Borka has to change tactics, since he is low on fury and unable to realisticly reach the siege engine.  He lobs a bomb, misses everything, throws a spray on a couple models, then retreats into the zone on the right.

The left long riders would like to make a play on Magnus, but due to underperformance of pieces in the center, can only work at taking out dwarves and Nyss.  They do a little damage to a siege crawler, but mainly act as a door stop, blocking the big thing from moving up.

The trolls now lead 4-0.  I am certain he can make a play on Borka, as well as contest zones or keep me from scoring.  I didn’t realize that I knocked out the cortex on one of his jacks.  So he cleared his circle on the left, using the dwarves and remaining Nyss.  Weapon masters everywhere feels like cheating.  Thankfully, not every faction has groups of 10 weapon masters just hanging around on the cheap.
Having cleared the zone, he has some choices.  He decides to take out the Earthborn and Rok.  Again, he didn’ have enough quality shots to kill Borka.  He also doesn’ have the RAT needed to score a shot on Valka.  Evidently, DEF 14.  Again, sixes can be hard to roll.

So the score goes to 6-1, and trolls win.

Conclusion

The terrain here helped shooting, as well as gave us both deep charge lanes.  Destroying infantry and being able to dominate a zone were the long riders’ strengths.  The slam is a neat trick that punishes an enemy who hides solos behind jacks.

While the double rider list seems strong, the merc list was weak.  Magnus1 really wants jacks.  I think Madhammer is stronger here, possible in the same list, or with a slight change from Nyss to something cheaper.  Possibly idrians.  Also, they could use access to magic weapons, maybe Aiyana and Holt.  Like this:

My own list could use some work.  I would like the armor bonus and speed bump that the Krielstone can give.  But I have to be willing to play it aggressively.  Also, I have to make room.  The play tyle changes a bit, too.  The battlegroup will play conservative  while the raiders serve as melee bait.  Then the long riders charge in.

I don’t get all three Warbeasts, but do pick up two more units (one and a half, really).

Sunday, the new version will see play.
