The Game

Borka sent the Raiders wide left.  All the buffalo rode off to the right, the stone and battlegroup took the center.

Jalaam deployed similarly.  Reivers on each side, battlegroup in the center.

Turn 1

In retrospect, the raiders should probably have run up the center so Borka could catch them in his control range.   Instead, they swarmed the circular zone with the acid pit on the left.  Borka cast Snow Shroud and dumped three fury on the Krielstone.  The Krielstone warped for speed and armor, then walked 6 inches.

Most of the long riders fell within the stone’s aura, so they took off at SPD 8.  I knew the front line would probably take some hits.

Reivers advanced and opened fire on both sides of the battle field, killing a Long Rider and all but one Raider.  The Cyclops Raiders shot another rider, and Horthol fell from his buffalo die to a huge shot from the Cannoneer.

Jalaam walked up and took some pot shots at Horthol, to try and finish him.  He realized he ran his Warbeasts too hot and attempted to make the most of his fury rather than dump it.

That would be his undoing.

Turn 2

The Krielstone spent a fury on speed and armor, then pushed into the circle zone to catch as many models as possible in case this assassination attempt went south. They generated enough Fury to max out the stone.

The lone raider opened up with a grenade that missed Jalaam wildly, landing on the stone hut in the center of the board.  Rok followed up by chargung Jalaam, who was barely visible.  Although he missed the warlock, he completely froze the warbeast standing behind.

Borka advanced up, throwing a bomb, then following up with a frost hammer before retreating.  Jalaam’s defense helped him avoid the bomb, but not the spray.

The Fell Callers gave the unpainted Long Rider unit pathfinder so one could charge over the wall, and the painted riders were given a +2 to mat.  The painted unit pressed forward, and although the rider destined to meet Jalaam wanted to slam into the warlock with the full might of the buffalo, he knew he could not due to the position of the building.  Instead, he charged, scoring an impact attack, and immediately crushing Jalaam’s armor with his axe.  Jalaam was not tough enough to withstand the blow.  Had he been, the painted rider would have repositioned so the unpainted rider might finish the deed.

Initial thoughts

Long Riders bully scenario.  With a 13″ threat on their weapon, a 11″ impact threat, and an 11.5″ slam means the riders become dangerous.  Hunter’s Mark could add 2″ to the charge and impact, but I don’t own Lanyssa, nor am I running the riders in a Kolgrimma list.

I don’t like relying on crits, but they do happen.  Seeing a stationary model on the table just makes my day.  I almost want to squeeze in some winter trolls for stationary crits, but I don’t really think this list needs a MAT fix.

Remembering Stumbling Drunk on Rok, as well as remembering that the riders pick up an extra die on impact attack rolls seems to be hard for me.  More practice needed.  Maybe tomorrow I will get another game in.

Possible changes?

Someone on the Facebook Trollblood group suggested I try to squeeze in a Runebearer.

Had I been able to reduce the cost of Snow Shroud, I may have also cast Battle Charged at the beginning of the game.  Or fired off two hammers at Jalaam.  I also could have centered Borka better and protected more dudes.

The thought was to drop the Raiders, but I think dropping Valka gets me more bang for the buck.  Valka hasn’t done anything but score points, and either Fell Caller can do the same.
