I convinced my teenaged daughter to play a little war machine last week. She likes the electrically charged Cygnar Storm Callers. They remind her of the “Girl Genius” comic. So I explained Haley’s powers as a spark and showed her the Storm Strider with the callers and their crazy hair.

At 35 points, positioning becomes vital, since you generally don’t have tarpit or support pieces bloating out your army.
We placed two flags on the center line, spaced 10″ apart to give us something to fight over. My plan was to advance far upfield, feat, preventing ranged attacks and close in for melee. I figured that if Haley feated, I could still run up to engage.
Haley feated in response to Borka. What I learned here is that I would not only lose my attack, but also wouldn’t be able to engage because I couldn’t run.
Let me stress that: Haley 2 prevents running in. The feat says a model activating in her control area must forfeit either Normal Movement or Combat Action.
Page 29 Primal Digital Digest says “a model cannot voluntarily forfeit its Normal Movement or Combat Action if it is also required to forfeit it, and a model cannot forfeit the same thing for multiple effects.”
Since a running model “must forfeit its Combat Action before advancing,” and it already forfeitted it’s Combat Action per the feat, it can not run.
Haley2 was able to position her army just out of my range to engage. Since my army was all melee, I really needed to engage so that her army could not shoot.
On my turn during her feat, I moved up 5″, and ended my turn. She was able to light Borka up with a Reliant shot, 3 shots from Storm Strider, and 3 hits from Thorn. She still had a firefly to go. Rok and the Mauler tried to countercharge, but didn’t break Thorn before the nimble jack skewered Borka.
It was a good game for the both of us. She learned how valuable future sight can be, and after exploring Haley’s incarnations urged my to buy Haley 3. Hopefully I’ve found a Cygnar player to spar with during the summer.
