Bearka Night

Bearka 35 pointer

The guys at the local store didn’t want to play 75 tonight, in an effort to get more games in and try some new dudes out.  I’ve struggled with rumble and small point Steamroller due to the support I’ve felt is needed with the Troll army.  I also get stuck on model count.  In general, the number of models trolls bring to the table at x points is fewer than other factions.  I’ve read many complaints about how unfair and unbalanced that feels, but I don’t believe the math supports the feeling of unbalance.  I’ll write about that later.  For now, let’s talk battle reports.

Borka 2 list

With only 35 points to bring, I wanted something big, beefy, with some free points too.  Power of Dhunia seemed the best way to make it happen.  Borka 2 seems to like a lot of countercharging beasts.  Rok kicks butt,  pyre buffs Borka, Mauler buffs beasts that don’t buff themselves.  Last time I tried this, I wished I could do some ranged damage, so I brought the Bomber instead of the Blitzer (12″ vs 10″).

Borka, Vengeance of the Rimeshaws – WB: +29

– Rök – PC: 21 (Battlegroup Points Used: 21)

– Pyre Troll – PC: 9 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8)

– Dire Troll Mauler – PC: 15

– Dire Troll Bomber – PC: 19

Northkin Shaman – PC: 0

Troll Whelps – 5 Whelps: 0

Whelps help a lot.  The shaman won out over Janissa here, because I figured I could use the Def debuff and possible spray.  Shaman also fits better due to natural cold resistance.  If I took Janissa, I’d have to run more than one upkeep, and Borka is normally short on Fury, so not having to cover Janissa is good with me.

Game 1: Cephalyx

I’ve seen these guys, but never played against them.

Cephalyx Dominator – PC: 1

–    Herne & Jonne – Herne & Jonne: 5

The battle itself probably wasn’t played as well as it could have been.  He did use his Rampager ability a couple of times, but dice screwed him.  Borka’s Bomber did a lot to the Wrecker, which should have used hyper aggressive,  but I think he forgot he had it, and I wasn’t aware.

There was a neat interaction with the Dominator where it died, and Herne and Jonne ran off.  The two also lost tough, and were no longer affected by deceleration.   So Dominator need to hide, but be in range to command the unit under them.

Borka lost after the Cephalyx TK ‘d my whole army, TK ‘d Borka closer, and smashed him with a Warden.

Game 2: Mercs

I think the merc army may have been a point over, but it didn’t matter.

Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress – PC: 4

Idrian Skirmishers – Leader & 9 Grunts – PC: 15

This game was chock full of surprises and first evers.  This has to be the first time Rok trampled through a unit to kill a heavy, first time I’ve used him to throw a heavy, first time my opponent Used Magnus ‘s nuke to kill something.

We played linebreaker, and at 35 points we felt pretty thin.  I deployed 2d, and placed the Bomber and Northkin far right to take a flag.  Iridians deployed to my left, probably to avoid the Bomber.

As the game began, I found myself shifting left to try to guard flag and objective.  Bomber was able to lay into the Renegade, damaging it heavily.  Magnus channeled a spell through it to kill the Northkin after I scored on his flag.

The Iridians swarmed Rok, but only got in three hits before he stumbled backward out of melee range.  They did a ton of damage though.  Rok only had 8 points left, and body was out.

Rok ate a whelp, primaled, and trampled through the Iridians and Lanyssa,  then swung at a Freebooter till it died.  His next turn, he’d frenzy on an Iridian who walked up to him.

Meanwhile,  Borka gets a countercharge off on Gallant, making the impact attack, then critting on him, Slamming him back a few inches.  Getting boosted attack rolls on a charge because he’s cavalry, and hanging onto the Pyre troll’s animus for a whole round is super sweet.

Magnus stopped me from finishing the game by feating and forcing me to only move side to side.  So next turn, pyre Troll died, and Borka took a ton of hits from Gallant’s purgation sword and from Magnus.  Not being able to do anything allowed Borka to hang onto Fury.  The Pyre’s death topped him off, so he shunted damage to his beasts.

I probably should have activated a little differently on the final turn, but it all worked out.   Borka shifted closer to Gallant, making room for Mauler.  He beaned Magnus a few times.  Rok advanced just behind the heavy jack, Primal boosted strength and MAT, then threw the thing (tied the contested roll) at Magnus, knocking them both down.  Bomber threw a bomb at Magnus, killing him.  I had a second bomb and a Mauler in reserve.

In retrospect, Magnus could have tried for points.  If he had been able to magic out my objective, and dominate the other flag, he would have won.  He might have pulled it off, or at least drawn out one or two beasts to pick apart.  Magnus and his crew isn’t fast, but terrain was blocking my access to the far right flag.

Good games no matter how I look at it.  Always a lot to digest post game.

For those worried that trolls aren’t all that, I suggest trying out the unusual.  Our side is full of cascading combos.  Power attacks are super important.   Knowing how the other team works and being able to take out key pieces will go a long way toward a win.  I’m going to try running an army without the stone.  I liked not having to fuss with it this game.  It was freeing.
